Now that the T-Tops have been completed, the one of last details on this car that needs to be addressed is the hood bird. The gold not as brilliant as it should be. I will be removing the old one myself. Any comments or advice on this job? I am looking at the Phoenix brand hood bird for $269.

Beautiful day for a drive. The T-tops totally transform this car from blah to fun!

The car looks great - wow. Congrats to you. What’s the story on the paint? It looks incredible.

I've plucked a few chickens....in my day......but NOT 40 year old ones....off of NICE paint...

The commercially available spray on decal removers....will be worth consideration...but may harm the paint...

You might try boiling some cotton rags in water....and laying them on the bird...to soften...the vinyl...then work the edge...with a plastic spatula....

It worked for me..on some stripes...but not on a 40 year old hood bird...Good Luck.........

Second Gen Graveyard in Cali has just started selling the decals from Phoenix and a discounted rate. Look John D. Lorean up on facebook or his site good prices.

Secondgengraveyard.com/

You can also use the 3m rubber wheel to remove the decals with a drill does a good job from what I see online but I have never tried it. There are other vendors making similar products. I'm researching as well as I have a decal on my 77 black car i am going to have to change at some point. Keep us posted as to how you did it I'm definitely interested.

Yea, I had a "driver" wheel that had nasty looking spokes. I shot gold on it for the meantime and it didn't look even close to right without the grain in the metal.

They make single edge razor blades that are plastic....why? to remove inspection decals and such on cars with plastic windshields...

One of these and a heat gun might help...

Wheel looks great! Where did you get it. I have a nos in mine that had a small nick that I filled. If you dont know where to look you wouldn't know it, but I would like to get one that is perfect. Other than that it was perfect with no use. The guy I got it from got it from a dealer still in a box. Speculation was it was a warranty repair.

Thanks. That is original paint that has had countless hours put into it. There are a couple of door dings, and a small area of checking, consistent with GM paint of that era. It has always been garage kept and it just turned 44k.

Man, if that’s an original paint and hood bird car, I think I would leave the Bird alone unless it has bigger problems than fading.

You might want to give some thought to finding a NICE replacement hood.......and attempt to match the OE paint color and finish...and put the correct bird on that one instead......Your original hood will make a GREAT wallhanger.....
