My sister just got a notice from the IL Toll commission that has three unpaid tolls in March, and a picture of the back of her daughter's car.
The tolls were only 4.** for all three but they fine you $20 for each violation. Neice claims she forgot the newly aquired car she was driving didn't have the license plate transferred from her previous car, which was registered under Mom's I-Pass. I say lame excuse, but I wonder if there is a way to settle up the unpaid tolls before a certain time period, and they might wave the fines? My sister thinks they will only not fine you if you contact them right away, after you realize you accidentally went through an I-Pass without authorization. Any Illinois members know what the scoop is? |

Give them a call and explain the situation. Being that the car should have been plated with a plate that goes back to an account they should just simply reduce the charges to the amount of the tolls… It may depend on the person you get on the phone, but I have been successful in getting charges dropped with my kids cars in situations just like the one you mentioned…

Thing is, she got the (new to her) car back in January, and it had a regular issue IL plate on it. The one on her previous car was going to expire in a few weeks, so they got a new plate instead of transferring the old one.
Not sure they're going to accept "we just didn't get around to registering this plate with the subscription" excuse. |

They need to go on line and update the registered vehicle list.

What happens if you never pay. I went thru once about 5 years ago and never paid the fine. That one sneaks up on you, probably on purpose. I don't live in IL.

She just said she forgot to add the new car

Same thing happened to my wife when she got her new car with new plates. When she called they removed the old plate number from the account and added the new one. They credited all the penalties and just charged her for the tolls. Had to call again a month later because some of the tolls hadn't yet processed to her account at the time of the first call.

Maybe kind of off topic but... They really go to great lengths to catch violators. I borrowed a buddy's truck and trailer once to go fetch a car I bought on eBay in Ohio and had to go thru Chicago. On the way back, I could not get over soon enough because of bumper to bumper traffic and missed one single toll. The car I bought still had the ohio plates on it (owner didn't want them!) and they actually found him from the photo of the car on the trailer, and he contacted me and says "hey, I got a fine from Illinois from you not paying a toll!" And he emailed me a pix they sent him of his car on the trailer. I had forgotten all about it. True story. Apparently they could not get a pix of the trucks plate it was blocked by the car and trailer... Tip- pay all tolls, and never leave plates on a car you sell to some guy from Wisconsin. I still have those ohio plates on the wall in the shop, kept them for memories.

I have an IPass account, but let the money in it dwindle. I got notification about a week after driving the Northwest Tollway up to Wisconsin. Explained I had an account, but there was no money in it at the time. They let me just pay the tolls.
