The price structure of the Safe-T-track is the same as on the A, G and F bodies; $42.13 for standard STT and $63.19 for HD STT. The cutoff was by gear ratio only; 3.23-3.36 with 3.23 or lower numerically being $42.13 and 3.36 and up being $63.19. With 3.90 or numerically higher STT became mandatory. On the big B cars all STT's are the same price regardless of gearing; $42.13.

In terms of actual physical content I know that 3.23's on the G used a 4 pinion with STT or open diff unlike the A or F cars which used a 4 pinion only on the 3.36 and up. It's been many years but I seem to recall that while studying the MPC that only the GP could be had with forged axles which only came with 3.90 and up if I recall correctly.

Forged axles came in GTO/Lemans 8.2's as well.

I thought that the HD-STT meant 4 pinion, N-case, and forged axles, but never pulled my 3.55 HD STT rears apart to check. My 4.33 rear (1970) was forged. I have a 3.90 rear in my 68 'vert, but haven't pulled axles from it.

For those following along - the nodular housing has an "N" cast into the top of the "nose" of the housing. Right above the pinion seal. You can't see it from under the car, but you can feel it.

Cast axles are constant diameter and smooth surface. Forged axles are tapered and rough surface.

Took apart one 8.2 that had one cast and one forged axle; not sure how that happened, but would be interesting if it came like that from the factory.

Years ago I took out the passenger side axle because the outside bearing was making a slight noise so I could have another pressed on the axle. The passenger side axle was forged--tapered and rough. I knew enough then to know the difference. The rear is a HD rear with the N cast on the housing. My Judge was built 01C in Baltimore. The rear end assemble date is the latest date code on my car. I have never had the driver's side axle out.

The "standard" 3:55. It is an early pattern 4-speed. There is no gear option.

I have a couple of 1969 3.23 limited slip rear ends, and they are 4-pinion posi units.

I have a 2.92 limited slip out of a GP, and surprisingly it is a 4-pinion posi unit as well.

Nodular housing or gray iron? Forged or cast axles?
