....there's your problem, right there! I knew it was bad when 'piston cheese' started falling out when I loosened up the cylinder head. ....then I pulled the driver's side head. Never seen so much junk in a cylinder! I guess the heads are about what you'd expect. I hope to use these #62 heads, they're just cast iron, probably be fine with a complete rebuild. Right?

Meanwhile, the 428 block. I'm guessing it has maybe 10-20k on it, you can see a 'ridge' but you can't feel it. Had Speed-Pro forged pistons. Cleanup and re-ringing it is not my first choice, but if this car is going to see the road before I retire, I'm running it, unless I hit the lottery The rest of the car is going to absorb a LOT of my cash. It won't be a daily driver in any case.I've run worse-looking and they ran fine, but that shiny line about halfway down the bore bothers me. Taking it to my machinist this week for a cleaning and Magnaflux, if it passes, a hone and cam bearings. 'Mo money, 'mo money.

My #16 heads were in a similar state, and they are now perfect after an acid bath and machining.

Degreasing the front frame. I was worried about the car slipping off the floor jack while rolling it, but I popped the saddle off the jack, and was able to bolt right through an existing hole in the crossmember to the jack! Much safer. I figure one or two more days of degreasing ahead.
Found a little of the original Expresso Brown on the cowl....the only place it has survived.

Got the 428 bottom end back from my machinist today. Money well spent! Deck had enough damage that one cylinder wouldn't have sealed. Got the bores straightened up. Had to have the piston pin bores honed (pistons were pretty tight), resized the rods (had the pistons off already, why not), fresh cam bearings. The forged pistons checked out fine. The nodular crank has been waiting to go back into the block since 12/8/05! (date on the crank grinder's tag)
![]() Also got the parts (bearings, gaskets, oil pump, etc etc etc) for the bottom end. Found a decent looking timing cover on the shelf (does have one broken bolt in it). Also found a 1112070 distributor on the shelf. Still need the oil pan off the junk 400. Forgot to order our vendor's Viton rear main seal in advance, so just thread cleaning/cam fit check/block plugs until then. Oh, and file-fitting the rings (first time for that!). Now trying to find out how much $$ my #62 heads need. Then, I need to crap out a bunch more $$ to start working on the body, so I have something to put this engine in

My '65 plates expired April '01. Drove it around yesterday evening. That's how long it took me to get it going again. Glad I used zip-lock bags and notes inside them to keep the little (re-useable) parts organized. Photos are also a great help. Good Luck on this project of yours.

Nice, you guys! Realistically, barring a lottery winning, I'm thinking 2018 at the earliest for any driving (i.e. sitting on a milk crate, no exhaust, no windshield, around the block). Fortunately, I have lots of free-to-almost-free stuff to do....paint stripping, welding holes, etc.
