Default Restoring a 52 ford with GM drivetrain, need HELP

Hey guys... My father-in-law has a '52 Ford with a V8 flathead that doesnt run. He wants to put a SBC drivetrain (I figure this is better than FORD) in it and bring the truck back to life. The truck is 2wd and we'd like a V8 with decent power, reliability and somewhat decent MPG. I'm thinking a 350 SBC with a 700R4 (would be NICE to have OD)... Which year 350's/700R4 should I look for? Which to avoid? Should we consider other engines? I'd love to put a PONTIAC in it, but they are so damn expensive... Suggestions appreciated. Thanks...

If you are looking for a engine & trans out of a donor car, ideally one of the late 80's early 90's LT-1s' out of a full size wagon & some Caprices & cop cars are the best power makers. Put a different intake with a carb & a different torque conv. & away you go. If you can't find the LT1, I would go with any Vortec style, they have the best heads & a roller cam as well as a one piece rear main that eliminates the pesky leaks of the old 2 piece. If money is not an issue, by a new ZZ4 from Summit or Gm Performance Parts & a 700 from Gearstar performance out of Akron, Ohio, they build some great automatics!

So the 4l60e does not present any challenges? How about converting an lt1 or Vortec to carburetor. Any major challenges there? Assuming I'm looking at a rebuild are there any differences cost wise? Trying to do this on the cheap hence the sbc..... Thanks

Get the flathead running. Or buy a modernized flathead that makes good power. Or, as a last resort, swap a Ford OHV V8 into it.

That's my story... and I'm sticking to it...

With the Vortec/LT1 style, all you have to do is use an Edelbrock manifold & your choice of carb. The Edelbrock 600cfm carb is just fine if you are not going to get wild with the internals. With the 700 trans, you need to change the torque converter & have the proper kickdown bracket on the intake (sold by many) Personally this combination is way cheaper & less hassle than trying to use a computer engine & trans, having to install the computer, all the wiring & sensors & pay someone to program it.

X2 JMO a small block Ford would be the way to go. Unless it's going to be a daily drive why would you put a sbc in it? The flat head would be cool looking,I like the look of "different engine's" i.e. flat head,Buick nail head or even a 409. But that's just me good luck with the truck.

Only thing a chevy engine belongs in is a chevy, look for a late model ford engine plenty out there.
