My internet now is $39.99 but will go up $20 when I drop TV. Already have Prime, already have Netflix - I'm not seeing a downside from the $169+ that I pay now for the gold package!

While I despise the cable bill and my family cell phone bill, I don't need this level of additional complexity in my life at this time.
You did ask for the downsides ![]() From Amazon: Quote:

Kinda my thoughts too Jim. I'd be starting from basically scratch with 7 TV's in finding something else that worked...or kinda worked. Not for the faint of heart or those electronically challenged. Charter has me.....I pay the bill and pick up a remote. Expensive (relatively) but simple. At about $120 a month I suspect most of us piss that much away during a month doing other things and don't think a thing about it.

If your going to run and antenna and you have several TVs the best way to do it IMO is to run a pre-amp right on the the best/biggest yagi antenna that will fit on the roof. Aim it for the best signal. Use an app like this to find where your antenna's are at.
http://www.antennapoint.com/ Use a compass app on you phone to aim it. Then use a good quadsheild coax to a 8-way splitter. Run coax to each TV. (assuming you can) The 8 way splitter will really knock down a lot of db(-10.5 db). So you may need another amp. Easy way to do some checks is with different splitter and they try a 2-way(-3.5) splitter and then 4-way splitter(-7db). With many of the digital TV's now they have a signal strength meter on them. |

Dropped the tv service in 2011. Only have cable for the internet. & that's creeping up in cost. Looking for alternatives. Don't watch tv anymore. Get my news off of the computer.

I dropped cable at least two if not three years ago. Really don't miss it much. I have five TVs, all of them hooked up to antenna. What I did was get a cheap antenna for each TV. They cost under $30 for each one. No wiring problems, just hook it up and set it behind the TV and watch all 20 some free channels. I don't get all those "reality" channels but I guess that is my lose. Not sure what I've done with that extra $100/month but I'm sure it has gone to a good cause.

I've been thinking about this for awhile as we have Comcast Triple Gouge for $200/month. I don't care too much about the home phone. I do need the internet for work and I have the blast 150 service. The only thing we turn the TV on for is the History Channel's Vikings. Does anyone know if HULU keeps current during that show's season?

HULU is hit and miss, depends on the show. Sometimes they show up a few days after they air, other times it's a week, other times it's after the whole season is done. They seem to have a different contract with every show. We use them a ton instead of cable.

Well, I have not had TV for over 15 years.....don't even miss it. I hate watching an hour show that has 20 minutes of commercials for stuff I'll never even look at. Tired of watching John Wayne movies. I saw al of the in the theater.
It's just too much money down the drain. It's more enjoyable fixing my streetrod or even working on my diesel dually. |

I did.
Set up a media server in my house and watch old movies I've collected. I had an antenna. I have Apple TVs and watch Netflix and Amazon Prime. The latter only because I want the free shipping but neither Netflix or Amazon is a world beater. I might dump one this fall and get Sling TV so I can watch the college football I want.

I got rid of cable about 2 years ago, no turning back.
I have a paper thin antenna in the attic that is amplified and get about 30-35 channels. Once I have some extra cash I will get a larger one. Having netflix, amazon prime is much cheaper and better than our old cable
