I bought this engine out of California about 4-5 years ago and was going to use it in my 68 gto, had some things change and I now have an engine and no car.

The vin stamped in the block is 237131589
The first 3 numbers are a little hard to read, but I'm pretty sure they are right. It is for a 68 gto and is stamped WT so it's for a 4- speed car, production date cast L017

If anyone knows of this car, let me know. May be willing to sell the motor if someone is looking for it to put back in the original car.

the 2nd and 3rd digit don't jive.

the first number in the series is the make. 2 = Pontiac

the second number is the model year. 8 = 1968

the third digit is a letter, that is the body assembly plant. G = Framingham MA (just an example)

the date code of Dec 1st '67 puts in line with a '68 model year car.

WT is the correct code for a GTO 350hp 400 stick shift. (3 or 4 spd)

if you can figure out the 2nd and 3rd digit, you could always get the phs for the car.

The third digit is a Z, thought 7 because bottom is light and it's painted so hard to see. So it's 28Z131589, thanks

Look and see if the 2nd and 3rd digits are not an 8 and Z instead of 3 and 7. An 8 would be 1968 and the Z would be Fremont CA assembly plant.

Looks like you beat me to it. I must of been typing when you replied. I think you now got the info you were looking for. With a Dec 1st 67 date code everything matches up. Thanks for posting hopefully someone is looking for their correct engine.

This is a great idea 300 and John. I still have the original bare block from my Tripower 4 speed 62 Catalina, maroon body, black top, that I owned and drove when I was in the Navy in Virginia Beach, Va. in the early 70's. Had to get rid of the car (salvage yard in Va. Beach near Dam Neck) but kept the complete engine, took it home to South Dakota when I got out of the Navy. Intake and carbs got sold eventually, (argh), heads, crank, etc. long gone. Would love to know that old car still exists and could mate this block back with the original car.
