This is sitting across the engine, and appears to originate from the area of the transmission. What is this, and where should it be attached? It's a 350 3spd auto engine. Thanks.

No. It goes to the gas pedal through a hole in the firewall. A pin holds it in place.

I threaded the linkage through the hole in the firewall, and I can see where it should go on the gas pedal. However, it looks like something is broken or missing. How can I attach this?

its broken, you need a new cable theres a ball on the end..
i can see the plastic washer on the pedal.it has a slot cut in the side...you pull the plastic washer off the pedal..the cable slides in the slot and you push it back in the pedal..friction keeps it in place and the ball is bigger than the hole in the washer

Thanks, very helpful. I might try the cheap way, and bend the end of the cable and see if it holds. If it doesn't work, no big deal - it's been disconnected for years and I never even noticed.

Well, my lazy fix worked - I bent the end of the cable (which has a 2" metal rod on the end) so it catches in the plastic washer. I just had to make sure I bent it at the correct spot so that when I press the accelerator all the way, it would pull out the cable completely. I just test drove it, and it kicked down a gear when I floored it.
