Back in the very early 70's I worked in a VW dealership as a unit repair mechanic ( rebuilding engines and transaxles ) . A guy I worked with was a ex Hungarian fighter pilot who defected into W. Germany flying a Mig 15. Smart guy but was a real Shyster.

We lived in Harrington Park (bergen Co.). The mechanic was in Closter IIRC. This was in the mid 60's to early 70s. Hungarian pilots were supposedly some of the best.

Amazing that you were able to keep it. I have never seen one on this coast that did not have the heater boxes and floor sections totally gone. When I would put on the brakes in the rain, a wave would always roll up to the "firewall". Ours had a sunroof and AM/FM Blaupunkt radio. Luxury model buddy. On trips, I used to ride in the well of that car and snooze on the scratchy horsehair carpet back there.

I used to car to finish off my 1/2 year in H/S ( L.A. school populations was so high we had a summer and winter graduating classes ) Then used it for college and then in the Navy, when I got out my wife used it to go to USC, then we restored it in 73. In fact the paint on it you see in the picture I sprayed in my driveway in 73.
In the mean time Dec 68, I ordered a new H-0 69 LeMans I still have that too. I painted that car in my driveway in 92. It's a 355 now a 455 to 462, T400, 3.23 Posi, factory A/C. Original v.roof and interior. H-O racing strong arm suspension.

I posted this in the Big car forum yesterday...

In the Denver Post this week they have a photo retrospective of a
big flood that happened in the Denver area back in 1976..

I had a few minutes so I decided to scroll through them..

discovered a 1965 Catalina ( think its a cat ) that was having a
very bad day.. Im sure the car had to have been totalled..

It still makes me a bit sad though..

I love that picture. If that was today, there would be 18 fire trucks, two ambulances, about 7 patrol cars, and a swift water rescue team with a news helicopter overhead. Love the guy scratching the side of his head on the shore!

Gotta get it out of the water if you want it to get to the junkyard...but yeah, looks like they could maybe wait until the water is down a bit. From looking at the house in the background, looks like the aftermath of a flood?...or maybe they just don't keep a real neat yard. If it was not a flood then I guess they just want to get the car out of the creek.

From the damage shown this looks like it was a really serious rain/flood/mudslide event.

The photos themselves arent really captioned so its hard to say what was going on
in each shot. There are a few more pics of cars ( some buried up to the top of the doors )
but most are property damage.

(edit: the pics actually do have captions.. according to the caption they are searchers making
sure there are no bodies in the car .. so the car must have been washed into the gully where it is
sitting)

I just find myself hoping that it was a 2bbl garden variety Catalina and not
something like a 2+2 4 spd car..

One thing I do find a bit amusing is how many ( Looters will be shot ! ) signs
that are displayed around the carnage..

It's a sedan so no 2+2. Look at the widows and screens on the house. A whole bunch of things drying on the bushes and looks like furniture out in the front. The Pontiac is just a passerby.

Yep could be it just came down stream and they are trying to recover it for fun.

Yes, Big Thompson flood was a bad one. That photo doesn't even hint at the amount of damage, to say nothing of lost lives. Hope no-one was trapped in that one.

Was hard to drive up that canyon for years after without thinking about it. It is a really nice canyon, pretty drive with a deadly history.
