15" disc wheel vs. drum wheels?
I'm about to purchase the Scarebird kits for front/rear for my '66 GP resto.
However, their website says we must have "disc brake rims" ... I'm picking up my 15" Pontiac rims that were powdercoated today or tomorrow but I never was aware that there were disc brake vs. drum brake rims? Am I crazy or will any 15" Pontiac rim work? Or can I tell whether the rims were disc brake or drum brake rims? Would disc brake rims work on a drum brake car? I ask that because the rims I got were from a drum brake '66 Bonneville that someone put the 15" wheels on. Any pics of the differences would be appreciated. I'm trying to use the 15" rim and Pontiac poverty cap look. Help!!! lol

I did the Scarebird disk brake conversion on my 1962 catalina this spring. I thought I was good with my 15" steelies. NOT !!! My front wheels were off a 1956 pontiac (15x5.5) and did not clear the caliper. Very disappointing. I ended up buying front runner mag wheels keeping steelies on the back. Ended up costing me an additional $600. You might be alright with a later 15" steel wheel, IDK. Still glad I converted to disk though. I highly recommend going with Scarebird.

I will be HIGHLY dissappointed if I can't have the original look with the poverty caps or even spend the $$ and do he 8 lug 15" wheels (if they even fit.)
It would a hell of a lot better if Scarebird actually told you the clearance you need to clear the calipers rather than all this crazy guess work. Just ordered them over the phone ... Is there anyone who knows the clearance? I can measure my wheels when I pick them up.

The problem is here is where the caliper hits the inside of the wheel - either the center or hoop. A lot of factory drum rims have 14" centers - definitely a no-go.

what is the amount of clearance that I need in the 15" rims for the front and back brakes? Please give the measurement necessary ...
Thanks

What car did your 15" wheels come from? The vast majority of them that you're going to find laying around are probably from late 1960s or 1970s cars which came with disk brakes in the first place. However, if they're old ones from the 1950s, or from the early 1960s (which will be rare) they may not fit.

They were on my 66 Bonnie that I sold ... I know that wasn't original ... I'm going to pick them up tonight ... I hope they work. I ordered everything for front/rear disc brakes from Scarebird and NAPA this afternoon. I'll be installing on the 12th ..
Does anyone know the space available on the disc brake rims? Would pictures tell you whether it was late 60's or early? Thanks for your help!

do you have any 14" rims around to measure inside the hoop to compare to the 15" rims you have? in 67+ they had 15" steel wheels for disc brake/HD Brake cars as well as the 15" rallys.

If they do not work, it should not be a problem. GMC/GM truck rims also have the same lug pattern, and there are MILLIONS of them with the nubs for dog dish caps. Available for very cheap.

I hope so. I'm shocked that Scarebird can't tell me how much room I need to clear the calipers since they tell me what rotors and calipers to purchase.
