53 years. So long ago, the memory has softened with time.
I was in Mrs. Carver's 5th grade class when Mr.Thomas, the principal, softly knocked on the door and announced that the president had been shot. A short time later he returned and said simply "President Kennedy is Dead."

I can't help but think of what a different world we would live in had he survived, along with his brother. He had his issues, to be sure. But also some stellar qualities that modern politicians should take a cue from.

I was just 5 years old and I can remember quite clearly. The reason being is that a bunch of adults (parents, grandparents, total strangers) crying makes quite a memorable impression on a little kid. I was in kindergarten and when the news broke, they shut it down and everyone went home.

I was sitting in 3rd grade class at St. Bernard's in Omaha, Mrs. Faye was the teacher.
Announcement came over the PA, I believe said he had been shot and we were to pray for him. My sisters heard the same in their respective 2nd and 4th grade classrooms. Don't recall if we got a 2nd announcement that he had died but likely so. I don't remember any tears. I remember that we got Monday off. I remember seeing bits of the funeral procession on the B&W TV at home as I went in and out of the house, I'm sure my mom was watching, don't recall if my dad stayed home from work. Mostly played outside with friends that day, wasn't really a big deal for us kids. He might not have been remembered quite so fondly had he served 2 terms, not sure that he would have done better than LBJ with regards to Vietnam. Celebrities that die young tend to be remembered much more fondly than they probably deserve. With tongue in cheek, for the conspiracy theorists, I have always said Joe DiMaggio was behind it, avenging Marilyn Monroe's suspicious death. More important to me was that my GTO had rolled off the assembly line at Fremont 2 days earlier. |

I was a freshman in high school, on lunch break when the announcement came over the PA that he had been shot. I could tell from the principal's voice that he was very emotional. Announcement came shortly after saying that he had died.
Watched everything on TV for the next few days. Still remember it well.

Was in 3rd grade in Pataskala, Ohio.
Remember someone coming into the classroom and telling our teacher what happened - she lost it and had to be replaced. What I remember most was her reaction. Buses came early and we went home. Was out of school a few days. Remember all the sad adults and music. BTCS |

I was sitting in Mr. Sirvin's 7th grade math class when the intern came in and told us that the President had been shot. It was the first of three events in my lifetime that I know exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news; the other two being the Challenger explosion and the Twin Towers attack.

I was in high school.
History tells us that Kennedy was a jerk, got us deeper into Vietnam, then LBJ...... what a pair. They got over 50,000 of our guys killed for nothing. Seems he pissed off the Soviets, the Cubans, the Mob........ The media still adores anything to do with the Kennedys...When JFK jr came to town, they rolled out the red carpet, bowing down to him on the way. Not a lot of love for the Kennedys here but he shouldn't have been killed. The one thing to his credit is the space program during the 60's. That's my view. Perhaps I should have posted this in the clubhouse........ george

I was 2 1/2 years old, but I remember it clearly. I was in the den with mom and the TV was on, and she started crying and fell apart, saying our President was dead. I didn't really know what death was, but I knew it was a sad, sad thing.

I was in the 8th grade in a very rural elementary school in SE Ohio. Principal made the announcement that he had been shot. The school was so poor that it we did not have a TV set in the school, so the principal let all interested kids listen to the news on his car radio...
I vividly remember the riderless horse with the boots turned backwards in the stirrups.. Hope this never happens to us (US) again regardless who the prez happens to be! JWW |
