Matt, 17620 A/C, 15590, WP PS. Pics of the fit, numbers and the highly recommended tension gauge also. I bought the belts and gauge on Amazon.

I strongly agree with the belt tension gauge. The adjustment using the 'deflection measurement' with a straight edge and rule has always left some doubt in my mind about the accuracy as nobody pushes the same amount and can then measure exactly the deflection at the same time.
Off the subject but the 2 photo`s of Matt and Ron`s engine bay are great. Except don`t forget that the rare and special p/s pulley is bright finished not black. This is a unique pulley to 64 with P/S and A/C. All examples I have ever examined are bright cad. |

EDIT - I posted before I looked at your pics and I see that these are cogged.

I have a NOS 64 PS pulley with AC and I am almost certain it's black. Not that it would be decisive on the issue but it's interesting. I'll have to dig it out and take a look.

Matt. Yes dig out the pulley and note the part# and measure the diameter. You may find a makers mark as well. Approx. 3 years ago, my brother called from Scottsdale (air conditioning capitol of the U.S.) and we purchased a huge inventory from a well known dealer circa. 1950 thru 1985. We literally have thousands of original parts and I was able to replace almost everything with NOS A/C parts on my car. I will be listing a bunch of 64 only stuff on the classified section this winter. I have 2 original pulleys left. Tempest with A/C and P/S. Both are bright cad. Very interested in seeing yours.........

War eagle The protected hub area of these pulleys I have observed often still retain the gold iridite coating above the bright cadmium, while the remaining unprotected surfaces show only the bright (now dulled) cadmium plating. Not saying they don't exist, but I can not recall ever seeing a black painted double pulley. However, the same can't be said for the single pulleys, where I have seen the black painted (stamped with part number) and unpainted (lacking a part number). We recently had a thread on the single pulley within the last couple of months. |

Thanks Jake. I am not sure I am following you because I am fairly certain there is only 1 pulley used on the 1964 Tempest p/s pump with A/C and P/S. In other words no 2 groover`s. The cad plate is all I have seen (exclusively) but the existence of a painted pulley could exist.. Around here we never say never. The fairly rare A/C option to the Tempest is one reason few judges would ever remove or add a point, which of course is not fair judging. They simply have never seen an original set up. Hell most judges don`t even know the correct door hinges and again reward a catalog resto over an original.
I also think the "plated" pulley/pump existed as an assembly line tip-off for the workers as well. Much like the correct grey of the engine bay harness and dash wiring exclusive to A/C Tempest. I now wonder why Matt has not tried the NOS pulley to see if his squeal goes away? His picture looks like the belt may be deeper in the groove than my NOS pulley and perhaps the worn groove lets the belt ride down in the middle of the pulley and not the sides which can be the cause of the squeal. Matt just lay the belt into the groove of the NOS pulley and compare....no need to install it...yet. Last edited by War eagle; 11-04-2016 at 04:56 PM. |

Thanks Matt. A good picture of a 9774454, which unfortunately is for the large Pontiac and not a Tempest. This pulley measures 7 5/8. Fairly common and on ALL p/s, a/c large cars. The correct 6 21/32 Tempest, part# 544840, is the one you need. The confusion is why I think that during the chassis build, where the p/s and pump are attached, a bright cad pulley would identify the correct assembly. However go ahead and see how your belt fits in the 1/2 groove. Again my belt actually rides a little higher than the pulley dia. probably 1/32.

Thanks War eagle, looks like we've identified yet another issue as I appear to have a full-size pulley installed.

Matt I am looking at your post #2 from a couple weeks ago. I didn`t notice that you have the wrong crank pulley as well. You need one that is indeed 2 groove but the outer one(to compressor) is smaller dia. than the inside. (the alt/p.s/w.p.).
