Exactly. No other year sold as many GTOs as 1966. And it was the first year as a stand-alone model.

All true. And I wonder how many '66 owners wished they had waited another year when the '67 was released. |

You ALWAYS wanted the newest model no matter the looks. Not saying 67's didn't have the looks but the uniqueness of the 66 tail lights did/does it for me.

In 1966 the GTO didn't have the Mopar camp biting at its' heels.

Good point, Bart. You are dead right that "GTO" had created a market that other makers wanted to tap into. I think the GTX was the best example of that.

If we're going to crunch numbers... Pontiac built 18,500 400 Firebirds in '67. That's 100,000+ performance cars, while auto sales were down 10% industry wide.
I believe the 66/67 split will always be closely contested. They're both great ones. |

Over the years I have owned most years. As for looks I like the 1965 but the 1967 is a better car. It had the Turbo 400, dual braking system, collapsible steering column, disc brakes and several other items.

I like the 66 best. As others have said, best tail lights out there. I also think the front end looks cleaner than the 67. Also helps that my parents bought a 66 new and brought me home from the hospital in it when I was born....

1967 is my all time favorite. Must confess I'm biased because my first GTO was a brand new '67 that I took delivery of on May 3,1967. But the '67's had a lot of other things over the prior year. Everybody will first think of the 400 CI and the turbo auto, but there were a lot of other upgrades besides that and the great looks. Dual master cylinder brakes, 4-way flashers, collapsible steering columns, Seat back locks, HO and Ram Air Motors, and Wide Oval Tires.

Bill, 66 had the 4 way flashers too as a option.... pull switch under the dash. My first 66 had it from the factory. It's added to the one I have now.
Also you could get shoulder belts for the 66 GTO. My first one had them from the factory also. And they are also added to this one. The only thing other than the wire mesh I've thought of adding is the 67 rocker moldings. They do set the 67's body off just right, making the coke bottle body design stand out even more.

A guy I know who was in Vietnam told me he couldn't wait to get back to the states and buy a brand new '68 model. He got back, took one look, and ended up buying a '67!

66...The grills are better looking and the louvered tail lights are bad ass

I know this is for the 66-67 , but my fav. is & always will be a 73 but the 67 would be my next then 66. I had a 67 & loved it. The 66 to me has only 1 advantage & thats the louvered tail lamp. Other then that the 67 has to many things above & beyond the 66 hands down. Almost all are listed & then there are still more.

66 would have been better if they'd done the same rocker molding treatment for it as they did for the 67 GTO. Wire mesh in the 66 grills would have worked too.
I always wondered why Pontiac never used the 3 speed automatic tranny (turbo350?) that was in the B-body cars. The ST-300 just didn't cut it in the A-bodies.

I like the styling and look of the '66 a little better, but the mechanical improvements of the '67 make it the better car, as others have stated. I love the taillights, decklid, and grills better on the '66. I like the dual master cylinder, the available disc brakes, the TH400, the His/Hers shifter, the improved head design, and wider wheel and tire selection of the '67. Although it isn't very hard to update a '66 with '67 style mechanical and safety items. I easily made these modifications on my '66 Tempest Custom wagon, and If I had a '66 GTO, I would install front discs, dual master, and if it was an automatic, The TH400 in it as well.

its a no brainer , 67 hands down is the better car in mechanicals and looks, the only thing on the 66 that might be better looking is the taillights but that's personal preference isn't it.....the mesh grill in the 67 is way better than plastic in 66 , ....the larger side chrome rocker panels on the 67 are way better looking, so side and front view 67 kills it, then there is collapsible steering column, dual master, 400 cube v 389, 3 speed auto v 2 speed, 67 disc brake option 66 only had drums, even little things like seat locks for front buckets, 14 inch wheels verse 15, so only part that debatable that might be better is the 66 taillights so would that beat all the other positives that the 67 has, nope, and I'm sure theres other stuff that was improved, and yes of course I own a 67 !

Both had 14" wheels. I don't think they put 15" wheels on a GM A body until.....maybe '73?
