Default pushrod length

What's the correct length for a stock 65 389? I went to Napa the other day to get pushrods and they said there were three different lengths listed, first time I've ever had this problem.

This is from John Wallace's website.

http://www.wallaceracing.com/pushrod-length.php

I happen to have an old set of pushrods laying here. I crudely measured them at 8-9/16" long end to end. I'd say +/- 1/32". That is a lot shorter than John W. is showing.

Can't explain that, I only have ever had two sets of '64 heads, no chance they were from something else. One set of heads was on a '68 350 block, maybe that explains the difference?

The '66 Parts Catalog doesn't list the push rods separately, Pontiac serviced them as a package with the rocker arm and ball.

Only one p/n listed for all '65-'66 V8s.

For '64, 3 p/ns were listed but that is mainly because the regular V8s used stud oiling, no hole in the rocker arm. The GTO and the 421 HO heads used the pushrod oiling and had a hole in the rocker arm.

For some reason, a 3rd p/n was listed for the 326 HO (4 bbl). Not sure why, I would have thought it used the same rockers and push rods as any other regular V8. Not sure how the package for it was different.

But for '65/'66 only one p/n for all V8 applications.

Not sure why NAPA lists 3. Maybe they list all 3 sizes as John W. shows but they fail to distinguish the application and year?

If you have cut the heads or decked the block or changed the head gasket thickness. even valve height. These things will affect the push rod length.

push rod length can also affect valve lift. this vidio is helpful

Do they make one of those for the Pontiac engine?

This is a good one:

a dial indicator set up will check your valve lift if you do not know it. may be good idea to check yours. you can have your cam check in a cam checker . this is a tool that maps your cam profile on every lobe.

Even the 64s had a similar length but some had stud oiling of the rockers and not thru the pushrods if I remember right. But the length was one length.

The H-O Racing Heavy-Duty Parts & Specs book lists only one pushrod length for '61 -'67 engines.

8.715".

With '67 being a transition year they also show the '67 GP and GTO using the longer 9.145" pushrod. As most of us are aware, the all-new #670 14-degree head used on the high-performance Firebird 400, GTO 400 and 400/428 big Pontiacs required a longer pushrod.
