Ram Air Manifold
Does the R/A manifold use the gasket pictured below or does the head pipe bolt to the manifold with no gasket?

I just saw Carmine's post and my question was answered. You guys are mindreaders. You answered my question before I asked it.

That gasket was used on '62 and earlier standard exhaust manifolds to seal the head pipe. Beginning in '63 they sealed without needing a gasket, the flare on the head pipe sealed to the tapered outlet of the manifold.
Here's a '59 driver's side manifold, note the flat sealing surface on the outlet that will require a gasket to seal:

B-man is correct, However when I look at reproduction ram air manifolds along with Pypes down pipes, there isn't really much of a taper at all to speak of on the manifolds and I don't see the down pipes sealing properly at all on these things.
It might be a case-by-case basis and making a judgment call. I'm getting ready to bolt all of this together on mine as we speak and I don't see a good seal happening without a donut gasket in place. Especially since some of the flange has to be ground back on the down pipes because they don't fit between the studs properly. I'm 50-50 at this point on whether I want to try it one way or the other. |
