Default Power steering gear

My 63 GP has a power steering leak that I believe is coming from the box. I've searched a lot on here and see a lot of mentions of upgrading to a 69 GP box. I see lares has many different numbers for the 69, which is the desirable one? And will my stock lines and rag joint connect right up?

Another option is to just reseal my box. Is that a diy project, or should I farm it out to a pro?

I just swapped a Lares box into my 61 Safari. Rock Auto can ship them. Fitment was at least 61-70 full size if I recall. 98 bucks after core. Original was a 4 turn lock to lock. This one is 3.5 lock to lock. Fairly easy swap and it comes with a new rag joint. Fittings are the same. Not sure how the GP box is different.

Do you recall what number the lares box was?

The '69 GP box should be the same as the box for the Cutlass/LeMans/Skylark/Chevelle. I bought a quicker steering ratio box (may be the same as the '69 GP box) for a '70 GTO for my '64 GP. The fittings are all the same and the same rag joint. Box bolted up great. My car isn't driveable yet, so I don't know how it will drive, but I believe it will be significantly better than stock.

Also I was going to do Rock Auto but having to ship them the core to get the core charge back deterred me. I found the same steering box at NAPA with a 10% off coupon. I think it worked out to the same or less than Rock Auto and I didn't have to go through the trouble of shipping the core. You may want to look at NAPA.

F Body boxes will work in a F.S. car. A body cars have the wrong internal stops and must retain the unit from an A body box.

Rock auto lists the 969 as the replacement for the 63 GP box. The lares 971 looks to be a 3-3.25 turn lock to lock variable rate box. It is listed for a 69 GP and the 70 GTO. Is that the one AZ64GP?

Tee,

I can't remember the model number, but that sounds right. I remember the steering box being a variable box with about 3 turns lock to lock.
