I am now in the stage of fitting the master cylinder and booster combo. I bought an 8" booster because it was the same size as the original. I have to use GM brackets to the firewall, the pushrod sticks out a lot farther than the original. Now the new booster will not clear the inner fender well. I am debating hammering it in about 1/4" in the one spot it touches but I am wondering if there are other options to this. It barely hits but it still interferes enough to push the booster enough so that it will not mount. Thanks.

Can't say for sure what booster I have and as I'm not home I can't go look. Buy my PO put a booster in my 61 when he added disc brakes and the only interference I see is that the horn relay/junction block needed to be moved. I think the booster is what would have been used on a C3 Corvette as that is the brake system that was put on. Fairly small diameter booster and I think is a double chamber. But it fit. And I doubt the PO would have done anything that required extensive mods. At least that is the impression I get based on other things I have had to re-do.

I debated getting a 7" dual booster but I have been told it would be better for a bigger one. I may go that route if need be, the inner wheel wells are actually thicker sheet metal than it looks. I have plenty of room between the engine and booster, but it is cramped already with the horn relay there (plans are to move that and the spaghetti wiring in that area as well).
I may have found a better solution. I may be using the wrong style brackets for the job so a cheaper option may be to order another set of brackets and send back the ones that I could not use.

CODYYY:
Hopefully your drum brakes are power too. Absolutely do not try to use a manual brake pedal when you convert over to power brakes. That one thing gave me fits for a year until I finally changed mine out. JWW |

PO of my Safari added new booster and dual master but never went thru with the disc conversion. He actually cut out a piece of the fenderwell for clearance of the proportioning valve and related brackes. I pulled it off and put a 64 booster and master back on. Still have a damn hole in the fenderwell ! I was looking around at different boosters and some seem to angle the whole thing upwards to give clearance but didnt want to experiment.

I got the other brackets in the mail today. I mounted them up to the firewall first however there isn't enough room to align the booster with the brackets, the inner fender well still is in the way. I ended up bolting the brackets to the booster and pushed it up to the firewall. It barely can get through. I do have power brakes originally on the car.
I have no idea how I would go about installing the bottom bracket bolts to the firewall. The proportioning valve doesn't look like it would fit anywhere under the master cylinder. Also, the booster to pedal rod is still too long. I could try to grind it down but it may be still too long. I either have that option or to use the 7" dual booster with the angled GM brackets and it should fit without grinding anything down. Plus the proportioning valve may fit under the master cylinder that way. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

My proportioning valve is under the MC. Yeah - things are a little tight. But as I did not install the system I'm not sure what grief the PO went through to get it in. I will keep watch on this thread and if you're still in trouble when I get home I'll try to look up the receipt the PO had for the booster. Good luck.

I want to try the Corvette booster but I haven't found dimensions yet on the diameter and length, plus the rod to the pedal looks a bit different.

Ok, I figured out a major issue. It turns out I ordered a 9" diameter booster instead of the 8" one. It doesn't look like there is an 8" single diaphragm booster available, only dual. I don't think there should be an issue with that but I have been told single diaphragms are usually the way to go. I'll send back the kit I got. Unfortunately I won't be able to tell if this will work at this time as I am in the process of moving out of state. The car will need to wait until I find a place for it besides storage.

Single 8 inch is not good here, need dual minimal.

Can't find the receipts for my booster. Must no have been included when I bought the car. Probably from Master Power Brakes as some other stuff was like the proportioning valve. The booster measures about 7 3/4 for the large diameter part. With the dual master cylinder it required moving the horn relay/junction block. As I didn't install it I'm not sure what mounting to the firewall or the rod are. Here are a few pictures. |

Thanks for the pictures, that should help me figure this out.
