Default Spare Wheel/Trunk Question

In 1970, were spare wheels generally mounted face down in the trunk regardless of Rally II vs plain steel wheel?

I have to say yes. You wouldn't be able to secure the mount if the wheel was flipped.

Yes, they definitely were mounted face down.

Thanks! I don't see many steel wheel cars, and this was the only photo I had to go from. Makes sense that it would be face down.

Doesn't the spare tire/jack instructions decal say to place the tire with valve stem up? I think it says that on my decal for 1968...I would suspect 1970 to be the same.

You mean that sticker that's not just there for decoration?!

For some reason I didn't think to consult the damned sticker. Sure enough, wheel is to be face-up unless it's a Rally. The hold-down in the picture is not the jack base, so maybe some of it is to be taken with a grain of salt.

Thanks!

I was wondering the same thing for my spare and happened to see the note on the decal and it answered my question. I was a little bummed because I have rally II wheels with red lines and I didn't really want to lay it in there face down but it seems like that is the only way for it to fit. I would like for it to be face up so one can see the correct stamp code on the wheel without having to take it all apart.....and to keep the redline sidewall looking nice. I will probably find a longer J hook and a large nylon washer to hold the tire down. I don't think a judge will deduct points....but I guess I won't know until I try it.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean! That's why I was kind of sad when I thought my XE steel wheel (and future BFG dual white stripe) would be upside down. With the wheel face-up, the jack base doesn't lie flat though.
