Pull the whole interior and paint it all. While you're at it pull the steering column and dash and get it all done right..."In for a penny, in for a pound...". While color variations are common, your panels show obvious signs of prior work due to the extremes in color...

Well, it never ends! Both front and rear speakers read open circuit so they are blown. I have ohm-checked the wires and confirmed that they are good, so today I ordered exact OEM replacements from S&M Electro-Tech http://www.turnswitch.com/. Their pricing was very competitive, little over $100 for the pair including shipping. So, I can't rebuild the dash until they come in. Looks like next Saturday the 19th will be a busy day of reassembly in preparation for the TA Nats.

Tomorrow I'll spend the day cleaning the seats and carpet (decided to keep the original and just clean it well). Got the console back from MPR today and it turned out great. Still need to dye the rivet heads metal color, and he is getting that sourced for me. We'll reinstall all the rear interior panels tomorrow. We have determined that most of the difference in colors came from UV/sun fade. Some of the original shades are visible where the seats covered it and blocked the sun. I will get all my AC ducts washed good and ready to go back in after the speakers and radio are in and working.

Quick update. Got the interior cleaned really well - decided to keep the carpet that came with the car - after a good cleaning, most of the bad spots were where you are not going to be able to see them anyway and it was still in good shape. I just couldn't ever match that color buying new. I pulled the front and back seats and all are now as clean as I can get them without using something too harsh that could ruin or fade the original fabric. Got some big stains in the back seat...spilled beer...extracurricular activities...? Here is the interior with the new console (formerly red - now SEM's Dark Saddle) sitting in my office waiting to go back into the car.



I should receive the two new speakers tomorrow, and the two NOS AC Guide Power Beam 5001 headlamps should arrive on next Monday.

MPR and I plan to do full interior reassembly this Saturday. All that remains after that is to get the headlamps installed, and take to the AC shop for a quick testing of the AC system and a recharge for the trip to the TA Nats. I'm leaving on the 24th (week from this Thursday).

PIcked this up today to haul it in.

5001 round bulbs are small high beams for the 4 round headlamp system. Your 1974 Firebird requires the 6001 large round headlamps. They are significantly more expensive than the 5001.

Edit: Wow...just looked at the two links you provided. Are you kidding me...$400 for a pair of headlamps! No wonder a previous owner converted to the quartz bulbs in the car now.

Thanks Chris - yep, mission creep is alive and well. Now I have to find the right set of bulbs...may have to mortgage the new trailer to buy them!

I bought the trailer from USA Cargo Trailer Sales on line. They are the direct sales arm for Rock Solid Cargo, the manufacturer in Douglas, GA.

I added the heavier 7000# axles, 16" radial tires, 10" bogey wheels, rear scissor jacks , .030 metal siding, 12" centers on floor, extra LED lights inside, full exterior LED light package, pre-wired and braced for AC, 7000# tongue jack, red and white reflective tape, eTrac on walls and floor welded to the frame, air vents, and a few other goodies. Out the door it was $8,615.

On The Parts Place website, those repro units are listed as: "Reproduction - Manufactured for Show or Off-Road Use Only" Anyone had any experience with them as being suitable for night driving? This is a driver not a show car.

My '73 survivor had its' original Power Beams that I replaced with these just in order to save the originals. I replaced one at a time so I could compare old and new. The bad news is the first two I bought immediately smoked upon being turned on and were toast. I received two new ones and they were both fine. The new light was plenty bright, and much brighter than the 43 year old bulb. I bought mine from Firebird Central and am glad I did. Parts Place does everything they can to avoid admitting culpability and accepting returns. At Firebird Central I called them and they immediately sent two new ones free of charge and enclosed a prepaid shipping label to return the old ones. I would give them a shot, but think about where you buy them. Here's a link.

They will be at the TA NAts so you might just pick them up there and do a parking lot install. I know MPR won't be there, but I'll have MPD in case we can't get the screws out on our own....

Great Idea Bob. I will order them and do just that. I like FB Central - got several things from them for this project. I presume that we'll be returning from the Tipp City Cruise after dark, so they'll need to work, but we can install and test prior to that. If they don't work and FBC has no back-ups, I can always put the others back in.

Well, actually, Tim Burton (Redgoat) served as the designated driver because I had been somewhat overserved. They are good. I'm sure the disclaimer is just related to the typical bullsh_t today around liability and litigation.

Thanks Bob...can't wait to make that Tipp City cruise with you guys and enjoy a good dinner. Getting excited about the car's first big show. I haven't been to a big Pontiac regional show since I took the white 71 GTO to the 2009 Co-Vention in Dayton. That trip was a blast. I drove that car up and back. This one will be a little different since I haven't gotten around to the AC or new brake lines,, booster, master cylinder, slave cylinders and calipers yet.

Seems like all I've done since I bought this car is work on it...I can't wait to get in it and just cruise with a good song on the radio and a big grin on my face.

See you in a week. I think my route takes me through KY. Where are you located? Maybe we can connect and caravan the rest of the way.

I look forward to seeing you and your car as well. I doubt I will be able to escape the orbit of work until Friday morning. In addition, I have a direct shot up U.S. Route 35 to Dayton. I doubt we have a connection this side of Dayton, but check the the maps and your timing. I am getting things ready tonight for next weekend. I am sure it will be a lot of fun.

Spent the day assembling the interior in preparation for leaving this Thursday for the TA Nats. I had to replace both speakers and have the original AM/FM Stereo radio rebuilt, but I now have tunes! I also have an MP3 Jack for connecting my iPhone for additional music options. I replaced the lens on the fuel and volt gauge and reinstalled all the AC ducts, glove box, center console, seats and dash bezel.

MPR and I reinstalled the rear trim panels , seat back and seat cushions yesterday. The interior looks fantastic now. After all that work, the last thing I had to do today was reinstall the two seat belt shoulder harness guides on the seat backs. Well...I managed to break a tab on the driver side guide, so I ordered a couple new ones from Fire Bird Central to be delivered at the show. I also ordered a couple new snap rings to hold the shift knob to the sift lever.. While attempting to reinstall the one I removed to get the knob off, I must have over-sprung it, as it was just simply too large to fit.

Tomorrow after church, I'll do a good detail and final clean before covering her up for the trip on Thursday.
