De-rotting the Rotten Banana (1972 Lemans wagon)
Brent and i made a trade yesterday in Kentucky. He now owns my '72 Lemans sport and I own the wagon. I understand that another PY member use to own the car. Hopefully he can shed some history about the it, I have always wanted a T-41 wagon for a long time. Plans are to rebuild the original 400 with big valve heads, factory aluminum intake and ram air exhaust manifolds. I'll be looking for rear 1/4 sheet metal and maybe a hood if anyone has parts they looking to sell.

Rear sheet metal is shared with many of the GM siblings like Chevy, Buick, Olds.
Do not be afraid to look for it there. Wagons are cool and fun. I had a 70 that I pulled the tired 350 out and swapped in a low compression 400 a Standard set of pedals and linkage and a Saginaw 3 speed with overdrive. It got great gas millage and also ran 15 flat all day at the strip.

Bandit,
Attached is the address of a craigslist in Kansas City, Mo/Pleasant Hill, Missouri for a SERIOUS '72 T-41 wagon project! This a reference only - I know nothing about it! https://kansascity.craigslist.org/ct...307947883.html But I can show you what it could look like with a lot of effort - my '71 T-41 with '72 GTO grilles installed. Love the title of this post. When I towed home my 65 Tempest Wagon in (what's left of it) its original Maize paint, my wife dubbed it the "Broken- Down, Rotten, Banana".

Jim, good to hear from you!
I got to see Rick Little run his 65 wagon at Great Bend recently.

What does that car weigh?

The 65 is a pig, it weighs 4900 pounds!
Jim's wagon weighed around 4000 pounds. Of course that was without AC. Not sure if his 71 was originally equipped with AC...

I have attached a weight ticket from a DOT certified truck scale for my '71 wagon. We emptied the car of all loose items as we do at the track, and I sat in the car wearing my helmet and similar clothes as we do at the track. Keep in mind that minor changes, such as tires, mufflers, etc. will swing the weight, so we have listed the race weight as 4050# for years.
Our local track scales showed similar weight but were the original manual beam scales with no recording capability and installed when the track was opened in 1966. The track employee who had watched the wagon run for years had an interesting comment as he hunted up and added more “balance” weights to obtain the actual weight – “Holy Cow” only he didn’t really say cow! Bandit,
After I realized the 72 GTO grills added 6# extra weight, I dug out the original '71 T-41 grilles. They were a faded grey, so I repainted them semi-gloss back and re-installed them. A photo is attached. Both the '71 and '72 T-041 grilles have the same outer frame/appearance/size as the GTO grilles, but the inserts are different. I added a shot of a broken 3:31 stock ring gear on the photo - it had broken the run before when the tires finally hooked after the first run burnout in far too much water. For information, stock gears are much harder and more brittle then aftermarket gears such as Richmond. And "race" gear are even softer to help prevent breakage from shock. Thus, stock gears will run higher milage and stay quieter then most aftermarket gears, but will break easier. Jim Hand Last edited by Jim Hand; 10-19-2017 at 05:43 PM. |
