Default Value of metal tail panel?

Hello all, now that my car is painted, I'm going to start clearing out the parts I don't need. One part I have is a tail panel that goes between the taillights. These parts are generally fiberglass. I know some early '70 cars came with these. Are these more valuable/desireable than the fiberglass panels? What's a fair price for one of these? Ive seen a few old posts of some members here saying what they paid for theirs, (around $700 if my memory serves me correctly) but I'm trying to get a ballpark I guess. Thanks!

Early 70 only and not sure if it was Van Nuys only or Norwalk as well.

I think mine sold for around $600 or so.

One of those things that is so uncommon that if you don't have it on your car it wouldn't necessarily make it wrong - but if you have an early car it would separate it from the pack.

John that is early......I have never seen a metal panel that I know of. When installed can you tell that it is a metal one?

My 01C Van Nuys T/A had one. No, you can't tell once it's installed. In fact, I didn't even know mine had it until a friend pointed it out.

What is the ship date on the PHS?

I'm not near my car, can't remember the cowl tag date.

I remember finding one of those in a junkyard in San Jose about 20 years ago. Never had seen a metal one before. I bought it and still have it for that reason. Sadly it was damaged; the junkyard punks pounded the lock out to see if anything of value was in the trunk, I distinctly recall the car was catilllion bronze, a base model and serial number was 100007. I would surmise it was a Van Nuys install only as I have never seen one on a Norwood car.

These tail panels seem to have a casting number on them and a separate part number that is different. From what I can tell...

The early 1970 only pot metal piece has a casting number that is hard to make out two of the digits. Something like 9813148.

But, I believe the part number was

9826896 12.966 23...................... PANEL 1 1970 1970 12-1

The later 1970 through 1973 fiberglass panels have a casting number of 8789638

but the part number was

9851259 12.966 All F PANEL ASM. (rear end finish)-fiberglass 1 1970 1973 12-1

I have a 70 Firebird, Norwood build date 12C / 223870N100099 It has the pot metal panel. That blows the Van Nuys only theory.

I have one that I think came off a Van Nuys car. The owner was in the military, and brought it to NC when he was re-assigned.

Can you post the cowltag?
And PHS if you have it?

I never bothered with PHS as I bought it for the standard interior parts for my Formula. The drivers door, trunk lid and trunk wiring harness were used also.
There is a freshly rebuilt 71 big car 455 still sitting in it.

johnta1, Are you collecting cowl tags in general or that specific one? I have photos of my late Norwood built 70 Formula, with PHS.

Does anyone ever answer the original posters question? These threads go sideways so fast...

Basically the second post?

These are so rare probably can't get an ideal price?

We're just trying to determine a timeline for them, now.

I like to collect any data for these.

I'd be interested.
