Default Data plate Wizards veiw this post, 65 GTO

What Can any of the Wizards on data plates tell me about this GTO.
I know the following, manual steering, manual brakes, rally gages, manual trans on the floor (4 speed?), back up lights.
My guesses, 389 4 barrel, no console, relatively a plan jane GTO, pretty common around this area.

Not really important, just curious.

what is this steering wheel from, not a std 65 or a 65 wood wheel.
buckets and back seat are from '66 I think.
also some lazy person swapped in a slushbox.

some more pictures and back story.
I found out about this car approx 20-25 years ago.
It was much more complete at the time I first saw it.
Owner would not sell it but allowed some parts to be removed for free. Odd that in its self.
Rally gages where pulled, hood scope insert, tail light bezels and bunch of smaller stuff.
Now owner is gone, looks as if property is going to be sold. I think owner was a hoarder just looking around at property.
Property has lots of "trash" placed all over it from old farm implements to vehicles. most of the stuff has been sitting for well over 20 years. Old GP is also on property, much more complete.
Lots of money is scrap metal laying around property but it would be a chore getting it out.

I think he is referring to the organic material which is conspicuously growing in the engine compartment.

I didn't understand the reference to the 326 either?

John, you missed the Group 5, code W on the Data Plate.

Front Pair Custom Seat Belts with Retractors.

Group 2, Code G does indicate the Console so it did originally come with that.

No way to know if 4 bbl or Tripower from the Data Plate. If the rear gear is original, it could offer a clue. Not that I really think it would matter now, but if it happens to have a 3.55 rear gear, very possibly would have been a Tripower car originally.

Also not sure if the Group 2, Code L was used by the Pontiac Plant in '65 for 4 spd only or the regular 3 spd also. But I suspect 4 spd was much more common so probably had a 4 spd even if the code was used for both. The HD Dearborn 3 spd was Group 2, Code B according to published references so not that.

The PHS of course could clear up any mystery. Not that it couldn't be restored but it hardly looks like there is enough left for it to make sense to restore it. Still some parts left that would be useful to somebody but that is about all that I see.

I'm thinking the front buckets are even later than '66, didn't think the seat back lock button was on the side like that til later?

Can't say about the steering wheel, not familiar with them. What are you seeing that makes you think it isn't a '65 Custom Sport Wheel?

What a sight. Would be sad to see that tree cut down to extricate what is left of the GTO. If by some chance the frame was still good and somebody wanted it, by the looks of the size of that tree, good chance the frame has become solidly part of the tree!

If the landowner would pay you to clear it off the property, the usable parts might make it worth the trouble.

Probably too much missing to try a restoration. Grab the rear "Pontiac" panel between where the tail lights used to be - someone will pay you good money for that. The front grills are probably worth grabbing, too, as is the steel panel-
if it's in decent shape - around them. (Somebody looking to make a GTO out of a Temest)

Yes, should have typed 389 though.

That's the part that tripped me up, 389 would have made sense.

March '64 issue of Car & Driver referred to the Hurst shifter with the "great tree-trunk of a lever".

But I think they were using hyperbole and besides, the tree trunk in this '65 is too far forward to be the shifter.

The way the tree has encapsulated the steering box reminds me of a 1950s truck around here that shows up at cruise ins. It has what has to be about a 8 or 10 pound lump of tree trunk surrounding one edge of the rear bumper. It's what's left of a tree that grew a little too close for comfort. They just cut it loose from the remainder of the tree and let it ride.
Fits the image of the truck though as it's a bit of a rat-rod.

There's a manure spreader gradually returning to the earth in a little town north of me. I snapped some pictures when we were up there for the 4th of July parade.
