Anyone have a photo of either or a part number for either?

What year are you asking about?
Also, hardtop or convertible?

Sorry, I must have been tired. A 66 2dr cp. I am thinking this would be the same as other gm A bodies in 66. Think the part number for the speaker would be 7294892 in 66 with a change to 7300614 in 67 with very little difference. Quite unclear as to the speaker enclosure. Thinking a change in 66 from the 65 enclosure. And also a difference if it was the single center speaker enclosure or one of the two side enclosures for a stero set up. Possibly the same clip; but different shaped. Thanks.
I think the 66 looked like this except both ends were slanted at a angle. This would be for the two speaker system. https://www.ebay.com/itm/68-72-GTO-J...FSvxbM&vxp=mtr Last edited by jim larson; 12-02-2017 at 02:13 PM. |

Jim, the A-bodies had a single rear speaker under the rear package tray..... if that option and the reverb option were chosen. The reproduced package tray covers will show that. For some of the B and G bodies, they had a single speaker built into the top half of the rear seat. For either models they never had speakers on the top of the package tray.

I am asking about the rear single speaker. I think this is a little later than 66 as the speaker has a cover over it, which I understand started in 67. Notice the slant on both ends.

SPEAKER COVER.
Jim, That is a correct 1966 rear speaker grill.
They came out with a few variations of package trays. The mesh tray/cover had perforations for the under-mounted speaker, were the solid tray/cover utilized that grill to cover the needed cutout. Note; If you had a rear defogger they didn't use/offer the speaker grill.

OEM Rear Speaker Cover
The first two photos are of my 65 rear speaker cover.
The last two photos are my 66 cover. Both have the open end on the RH side and utilize the full mesh package tray. Chris.

FWIW; FACTORY Vs DEALER
Just for giggles I did a little digging to see if I could get a bit more clarity on the Speaker Grill
After posting I was unsure if this was a Tempest type item, The reason I was thinking this way was considering the GTO & Lemans as an up grade, I thought the MESH package tray would be standard. Thus no grill would be used with the rear speaker option. This may be the case but from past notes and encounters with many GTOs/Lemans' with a rear speaker Grill it seems the Grill was part of the Dealer package. By all accounts if you ordered a rear speaker right from the start it was installed at the factory with the mesh package tray and no grill. If one wanted one after delivery it would be a Dealer option and the Grill used. One can assume they just pulled the Mesh tray as most of the Grills I've seen were on a solid tray. That is just a guess. Anyway thought I would add this in. Also an observation while looking at the factory speaker diagrams/images of the speakers. The feed wire is always shown fed through the rectangular opening of the speaker enclosure. I noticed on Chris' images this doesn't seem to be the case. Just a minor observation and follows the rule that there were none Cheers

Jeff, my first 66 GTO I bought had the rear defogger and the speaker grill on the mesh pkg tray cover. That rear defogger didn't really work all that great until the interior heat drifted back into the trunk to clear off the rear window. There was no duct work to draw air from the interior..... unless it was missing.

ODD, Can't say I've ever seen the two options together.
Never did understand why the Defogger was designed to only blow upward right behind the Drivers head. Pretty much useless in a cold car for sure. If needed and I turn mine on it usually hasn't cleared enough sight area until I've reached my destination
