I'm trying to find out for sure if a open carrier and gear set from a 1969 Grand Prix would fit into a 1965 Lemans, IE are they both 8.2 " ring gear and 28 spline axles. Yukon gear and Richmond gear seem to show them being the same part numbers for parts but that doesn't mean its always correct. just wanting to make sure before I buy another possible boat anchor...
Thanks Trevor |

Welcome to the Forums!
Moving the carrier and gears in those rear ends will work just fine. |

Perfect thanks for the confirmation, hopefully it will go together and runs ok only reason I'm going this route is that I bought a Powertrax no slip locker all ready but it didn't fit with my current carrier as the stock cross pin was .7325" and the powertrax was.800" which they assure me is correct for a Pontiac 8.2 carrier so I'm not sure what the deal is with the what I thought was Stock 65 rear in my car

http://forum.jdrace.com/viewforum.ph...c210ee222ddbfb Alot of good info on here about the 8.2s. 68 thru 70 buick had larger carrier bearing on drivers side than on the other side. Be aware some of the pontiacs were fitted with this buick rear instead of the pontiac one. My car was like this when it had the original 8.2 in it with one rib on the side of differential for buick instead of two ribs for pontiac on 8.2.

The early 8.2 bolt-in axle open carriers took the smaller diam cross shaft for the spider gears. Was at least a '64 thing, if not all of '65. The open carrier used in Pontiac 8.2 rears directly after that style, up through '69 models took the rh thread ring gear bolts & had the larger diam cross shaft.
The majority of 3.23 ratio '69 GP rears I've had over the years have been 4 pinion Safe-T-Track rears. I have yet to run across a factory '69 Pontiac A-body or GrandPrix rear that took tapered bearing axles, & the '70-72 style carrier & ring gear with larger diam LH thread ring gear bolts. From what I've come across so far, & have torn down tons of '69 Pontiac 8.2 rears, the tapered bearing axles & larger diam ring gear bolts/carrier first appeared in late '69 Firebird rears.

also "8.2 BOP" is not what was built, that is just a really poor name that has been thrown about by the aftermarket parts mfg's for over 4 decades.

Thank you for the info. That explains the cross shaft issue I had as my 65 I from what I can tell still all original part number on the diff indicated 65. I’m the third owner and it’s a 6 cylinder so not like the car was beat on and parts changed all over the place.
