Tires
Does anyone know if there is a difference between these tires? I went on jegs to price bf Goodrich radial t/a's and there was Coker for $113 and regular bf Goodrich for $129. These are 225/60 14 inch. Thanks.

Don't know but are you sure you want 225/60/14? It is almost 2 inches shorter than 225/70/14, which is the closest sized radial tire to the G70s these cars came with when new.

I thought 60's are a wider tire?

The 60 refers to the sidewall. Both 225/60/14 and 225/70/14 put the same patch of rubber to the pavement. The 225/60/14 will look like a 'fatter' tire because it has less sidewall and therefore less height. This will give you the visual:
https://tiresize.com/calculator/ I'm assuming that since you are posting here you have a 68 or 69 GTO/Tempest/LeMans so keep in mind there is a limit to how wide/tall a tire you can put up front without rubbing. Plenty of threads on that so just do a search. |

A 245/60 is the same height as a 225/70

Lol, now I'm all confused. Don, these are going on the JL rims. 14x6. I thought 245' s would not fit on these?

Tires are one thing I know very well. I've collected over 500 of them over the last 25 yrs. I don't know why. A 60 series tire is 1-2 inches wider than a 70. A 245 is equal to a G70. 235/60 is equal to an F70. I would personally run the 225/70 but the 60 series will fit on your 6 inch rim.

The numbers like 60 and 70 are a ratio of sidewall height to tread width. So changing width will change height if the ratio remains constant. Hence the 245 60 is the same height as a 225 70.
If I am not mistaken ... a "70" means the sidewall height is 70% of tread width. "60" means 60% of tread width etc. And back in the day, I think the letter code ... such as "G" referred to a specific tread width, the higher the letter, the wider the tread. The hot tire back in the 70's was the venerable "N-50-15" for your jacked up, bad-azz hot rod |

245s not recommended for 14x6.

For many years I had also thought the 50,60,70 was the width. But that's easy to generalize because typically a wider tire i.e.: 225-265 will need a shorter sidewall so it doesn't fit & look like a tractor tire. So the low sidewall height ratio (50-60) is synonymous with a wider tread. I don't think I learned that until the very early 90's when I bought an 87 Iroc camaro & was baffled by the 245/50/16's 245's do seem awfully wide for a 6" wheel. but, I am not a big fan of tires ballooning way pas the lip so I am a little biased. (no pun intended) A little bit wider looks awesome over oem sizes though.

I think that back in the '60s and '70s the 50, 60, etc. number had to do with width but I'm not sure about that...what I do know is that modern tire sizes are classified by the metric system. The first number is the width in millimeters and the 2 digit number is a percentage of the width and defines the sidewall height.
Example, a 215/60/R15 is 215 mm wide, the sidewall is 60% of 215mm and R15 is a 15" radial.

New BFG tires sold from tire vendors like Tire Rack or Discount Tire, are selling BFG's made with their current updated molds. Most likely why there is a price difference. |

I have always thought the combination of tread width in metric & the wheel size in imperial was odd, but I suppose imperial tire width would have been confusing.
But the reverse was true. I Have an all original 1983 Mustang GT, that has the Michelin TRX tires. One of the last gasps from Michelin's X tire development from the 70's. It has 220/55/390mm tires. Talk about an oddball.

Had a girl friend back in the early 80's that had a TRX Mustang. Had the little V8 right? And the wheel diameter was unique I think. If you wanted to use different tires you had to get different wheels.

Yep, Has to 5.0 HO 4 barrel @ a whopping 175hp. I was fortunate to buy the car from the original owners family. He had put some 14" Chrome nuggets & BFG's on it the following year, so when I bought the car I got the original TRX rims & tires with it. Sure wouldn't take it out on the highway with them, but they hold air & look the part. I think coker is remaking the tires now, but a they're a bit of $$ iirc. My wife's parents had an 83 GT when we first dated in the 80's. She would let me drive the car back then, Great memories from the time, so I have always been a little partial to the 5.0 GT's

Thanks everyone, looks like I am going to go with the 225/70 tires. What tire are you guys using for the 14x 7 rally 2 wheels?
