My advice to you from working in both a body shop and restoration shop is to make sure you check on your car on a weekly basis, take your wife at least every third time if not more. Do not leave your car up to a family member to check on.
At the restoration shop we actually require the owner to stop in on a weekly basis to see the progress and pay their bill. Most of us in the shop enjoy talking with the owner and showing what we fixed. A good shop will take pictures of the work they are doing to show you while you visit. I hope you signed a contract. As for the color, as long as you and your wife like it, doesn't matter what we think I look forward to progress pictures.. |

Got a pic?
'Shadow' sounds like charcoal to me, kinda means nothing to me, there's a gazillion shades. But, if you like it, then don't ask, just do. It's your car, you are the one that needs to be happy with it. .

This is the best pic I can find. I was holding onto the silver out of love for the car of my youth. Kind of a loves labor lost thing. My wife found this color. This is a photo of Hot Rod magazine. If you google GM Shadow Gray a 70 Chevelle pops up

That's a black and white pic, there's no color.
Go to TCP, and look at the color spectrums. Get an idea of several colors you like, and take it to a graphic artist with a stock photo of a 64. They can make the pic any color you want, and you will get a much better, much more accurate idea of what you want. If you are not specific, not detailed in your idea, and are able to present it to whoever is going to paint your car, chances are pretty good you will be disappoint. Don't let that happen, do the homework, make a calculated decision. Charcoal Grey: https://tcpglobal.com/products/rsp-u...CABEgIw4fD_BwE Scroll thru the enamel colors: https://tcpglobal.com/pages/acrylic-enamel-paint Scroll thru the urethane colors: https://tcpglobal.com/pages/acrylic-urethane-paint Scroll thru the basecoat colors: https://tcpglobal.com/pages/urethane...-paint-low-voc Ask your painter what he prefers to shoot, and zero in on a color of that type. They have mock bodies that allows you to see the color at diff angles of light. Click the mock bodies, look at how they are in diff light. You can have effects added, but that makes it more difficult to touch up if you have to do a repair. OE colors make it easy, since once you pick an OE color, the code can be used to easily match the paint, and it can be done across diff manufacturers. I'm not talking about looking at just OE colors for your year car, I'm talking about new car colors, new car colors are less expensive too. Once a color goes beyond X number of years, if has to be mixed, and pre-mixed batches are not longer available. Take a sunday, drive thru car dealerships, look at diff colors on whatever brand/model you want, it doesn't matter, you still get to see the color in person. Write a bunch of different ones down, take notes and pic, and go over your notes and pic in the evenings in front of the TV with a beer. Narrow it down. .

The paint code for 1970 GM Shadow Gray is 17. I am going to the paint shop in Anderson tomorrow and going to look at some colors in that variation. I don’t want an in your face color like red or even black. I will report back what I find.

Seems like every other car on the road today is gray or silver. Meh. Check out 1964 only Sunfire Red (a metallic coral/salmon color) or 1966 Copper Blaze (custom GM color). The square '64-'65 bodies look good in medium bright metallics: orange/copper/burgundy/greens/blues. I too am not a fan of bright red. But I painted my gold '67 GTO '68 Flambaeaux Burgundy, and I love it.

I am considering a copper too. My wife would kill me if I painted it red. Of course everyone loves black but I’m neurotic and could never keep it clean to my standards

Yes!
Like you and others have said, there are a bunch of red/black/blue/silver cars out there. I've learned over the years that the colors most everyone else prefers, I despise, and the colors they despise, I prefer. I don't mean to be a contrarian, but seems I am. I'm all about the 70's colors of Gold, Brown, Green, White, etc... If your slate is blank and originality is not a concern, be unique. Copper would be beautiful, and you'll have the only 64 in Copper. Of course it's always about personal preference, and personal choice.

There was a Copper/Black 2-tone '64 Lemans feature and cover car in Pontiac Perfection June 2020. Was also featured in an episode of "Fat and Furious" where it was a DNF in a runoff when "the throttle cable came off".
It was copper over black but looked more candy orange to me. The car had a dated look to my eye, especially with all the billet bric-a-brac everywhere.

I can’t visit weekly because it’s 500 miles 1 way. We do have a contract and work progresses on a weekly basis. If at any time I am unsatisfied I can pull the plug and go get my car. I have seen his work 1st hand and feel totally comfortable.

Make sure you have that in writing as it will fall under contract-law should the situation arise. And hopefully it never does but a contract protects both parties.
