If you buy a car or boat out of state and your CA resident you will have to pay the diff from what sales tax you paid out of state and the city you will register it in CA.Long Beach CA is 10.25.No personal property tax on cars but boats get taxed like car AND personal property tax.Tom

I know you have the registration and tag fees in your area but SC sales tax is capped at 300. That’s why people come here. As far as sales tax difference that’s insane, I’ve never heard of that. In SC even though sales tax is capped property tax is not, some counties rape you

Back on track, car is coming along nicely. No surprises found so far. Worst part as I have always known is the condition of the trunk lid. Other than that work is progressing at a steady pace everyday and so far all is on the up and up. My friends brother has stopped by and said the car is front and center in the shop with two guys on it.

So let me ask you this Champ...,being that I am at the GA line and have friends in GA, why do they all LIE on their bills of sale about the amount of purchase between private sales to avoid sales taxes being so high????? If you give me your cell phone number I will forward you a text conversation where a friend asked me what qualified as a “bona fide gift” in SC because they wanted to try it in GA.

Wait your right, it’s not sales tax, oh wait again... Georgia technically does not charge sales tax on the purchase of new and used vehicles. Hold your excitement, however, because the state does charge something called a Title Ad Valorem tax at a rate of 7%. This one-time fee is based on the value of the car. Sorry I couldn’t remember the Latin wording and had to look it up. My minds not what it used to be.

I will concede this, by Georgia law if you buy at a stealership anywhere then you are supposed to pay the Georgia 4% that they would have paid if they had just bought it in GA. In my experience with private sales however, people say the vehicle was a gift or they paid 500-1000 dollars for it so they only have to pay a fraction of the taxes. I can cite a specific example of a person claiming they paid 1000 for a 30K truck and almost getting caught. But as with anything with the law, it’s not what you know it’s what you can prove.

Private sales and under reporting values happen in every state.

The vast majority of vehicle transactions occur at dealers.

So, once again, your spreading misinformation.

Not worth arguing over, anyway, so my trunk lid is in really bad shape. My bodyman says of all the parts of the car it is gonna be the most time consuming. Sad thing is is that it is the best one I could find and light years ahead of the one that was on the car. Oh well cant ride the gravy train with biscuit wheels forever. As long as progress is being made daily I am happy

You could try Franks Pontiac Parts out west here in the CA desert. Usually has lots of rust free sheetmetal. A good friend of mine had two or three rust free '64 trunk lids but got rid of them about 5 years ago when he sold off the last of his Pontiac parts stash. Rust free parts are not uncommon out here.....less common than they used to be, but still out there. I would think a well bought rust free trunk lid could save you a ton of $$$ in labor in the long run.

As unfortunate as it is, I'm not totally surprised to hear about the condition of your trunk lid. Even the nicest examples from the desert often need some work. GM didn't do anything to protect the metal on the inside, so they always rust.

Are those new wheels in rear? I'd be concerned of overspray

He should just remove them and place the car on jack stands and mask off the entire underside of the car.
