Came close to having Wayne do a BBC for a 78 Z28 a year ago. Just worried about part backlogs, etc...went w/ a stroked crate sbc, an outfit out of Kearney NB. Blueprint Engines - I think Frieberger loves them. Was on sale from Summit - my door in like 3-4 days. lol.
Wayne has a nice reputation and even did that video series on poncho motors. Wayne is in Anderson, SC now....I have not used, but would.. |

Wayne has a sterling reputation with Pontiacs. If I had to hazard a guess I would say one of my “noisy” Lunati lifters let go. I had a pretty good ticker. If I can I will use the cam and a better set of lifters. There was no terrible crunches or anything like that so I am just praying.

Regardless of what’s salvageable I will not be using those lifters. I always had a weird feeling about them when handling them. I felt like they should be more “robust” in a word but then I thought if it’s a Lunati cam why not lifters. Then I had the ticker and was frustrated but then I saw the post wanting noisy lunati lifters so I felt better. Since I will be replacing the lifters regardless what is the quietest and I hate saying best but what should I buy?

If it does not need any machining I am rebuilding it myself because if what me and Wayne speculate is true the lifter jumped the bore. NO one has any Pontiac cam blanks but Isky said they repair cams no matter how bad. If that’s what happened that’s the route I will take. I know I’m gonna catch hell for this but I have built 8 SBC and put cam and lifters in a 389 before. If I don’t have to do anymore disassembly than I hope then I feel confident I can do it.

I overreved many times but that was with a HFT. Years in fact. MSD has a nifty ignition module with a build in rev limiter that will save you many future problems. Myself, I knew eventually there would be trouble back then but $100 bought a lot of beer. |

Its not his fault that there was a possible parts failure. I am not rebuilding anything per se. I will take it out, take the pan and lifter valley off, assess damage and do what is needed but if possible I am gonna avoid taking the heads off etc.

Why not just pull the intake and valley pan and KNOW if it has to come out first!Tom

Agreed. It could be as simple as replacing a roller lifter set and/or push rods from misadjustment. Hopefully no valve damage.
