I need to rebuild a 400. heads are 6x 100cc with some flow work ,a street comp cam , performer intake w/ 1460 edelbrock and a spun rod bearing. What pistons and rods do you think I need to make a nice tire smoker?

RPM rods and Speed Pro L2262F for a low cost build. Might need to mill the heads some...
If your crank needs work you might want to look at something like this... https://butlerperformance.com/i-2445...tegory:1234863

Hey, if you can drive over to North Central Louisiana, to pick it up, I've got a 455 short block that will make lots of tire smoke, using your heads, intake, carb & cam.
Price: $2000. OR, $2800 with my 6x-8 heads, which have stainless valves. Also includes FlowKooler alum water pump, CC 1.52 roller tip rockers, poly locks, tall chrome covers with K&N breathers, factory HEI with DUI cap/coil/rotor, MSD rev limiter module, & Summit mini starter. 500813 block, factory 455 crank, forged rods & pistons, CC 292 Magnum cam, Rhoads RL9518 lifters. Less than 2 street miles, and no track time. Built by a long time racer and member here. If interested, you can Email me at: [email protected] |

Your compression will be a little low with 6X heads on a 400. You might consider putting a stroker crank with a 4.21 stroke that would get you in the 9.0 to 9.5 range depending on the bore size you plane to go with. That extra compression will wake it up not to mention the extra cubes you will gain. Butler Performance has a stroker rotating assembly that should do fine for you.
This is what you need, they may have a more economical 4.21 stroker kit with different pistons and rods https://butlerperformance.com/i-2445...tegory:1234863

If you have a 557 block, a stroker assembly might not be a good idea.

6X-8 heads just don't make much compression in a 400 build. Better off to source out some heads with much smaller chambers, or go the stroker route as mentioned.....IMHO....

If your heads are already fully rebuilt then I would Mill them .045" on the deck and Intake flange and then in the rebuilding process of the the block deck it to achieve +.005" on the piston to deck height .
To me stroking a motor is waste with lightly ported heads unless very soon down the road you will be swapping on aftermarket heads or well ported iron heads!

Well, he did say he wanted a nice tire smoker. A line lock would do it

"...To me stroking a motor is waste with lightly ported heads..."
"...to make a nice tire smoker..." A stroker, with completely unported iron heads, should produce near 400hp/500 torque, which should "...make a nice tire smoker..." He doesn't need max high rpm hp, leaving nothing "on the table", in order to make plenty of low rpm, tire smokin, street power, IMO. Contrary to popular belief, not everybody needs 500-600hp in their mild street tire smoker. |

I saw his other thread about the issue with his 400 mile warrantied rebuild. He needs to go fight for that so this build may not happen if he asserts himself into fighting his builders rediculous claim to get out of the warranty....

The heads were cut .45 and the intake was matched. Stroker sounds good to me. As far as the previous motor I don't think I can trust that it'll last. I'd rather have the money to build another myself.
Thanks for all your inputs. |

"Contrary to popular belief, not everybody needs 500-600hp in their mild street tire smoker."
Now that is pure blasphemy! ![]() True statement, but 600hp in a street tire smoker sure is fun! Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
