Default 1968 Lemans fuel filler neck leaking

I took the 68 on good 20 mile trip today! I tanked up at a local station that carried ethanol free gas. I get home and smell gas... Fuel is coming out around the filler neck. I looked at tanks online and all the 68 tanks I see say without filler neck. Are the filler necks separate from the tank? It could be that a gasket failed if so. I looked for a gasket to no avail.

What are my options here?

Default Gas Tank Filler

I believe the gas tank filler is soldered to the tank; there is no gasket to replace or fail. I'd suggest dropping the tank, washing it out until there is no gas smell whatsoever, (Take to a radiator shop if you can find one.) and then re-soldering. Depending on the condition of the tank and filler neck, I. e. if it is rusty, you may just want to replace both the tank and/or the filler neck.

Are you sure it's the filler and not the cap leaking down on acceleration. The gaskets go bad on them.

Default 1968 Lemans fuel filler neck leaking

Thanks Ron! I crawled under, and someone attempted a fix before. I drained out a few gallons and the leak stopped. I'm in the market for a new tank. Does the 69 tank fit? I can't find a 68 with the filler neck and don't think mine can be saved. I really rather not deal with adding an old filler neck to a new tank if I can help it.

How'd this work out for you? My 68 lemans is leaking from the neck and I'd rather go with one that has neck installed too

I ended up cleaning out the tank and re-soldering the neck back on. That said, I should have bought the 69 tank and tweaked the filler neck to work.

If you do decide to replace the tank with a '69, here is a recommendation from Greg when he did it (post #9)

Hope this is helpful for future reference.

Ames sells a 68 tank with the neck in case anyone is interested. Looks like it would fit. There are some differences though....most notably the ribs at the filler neck are not present on the reproduction. Also the rear corner tabs are rounded and folded up where the original tabs are flat.
