Default coil bracket

Guys, solve this mystery for me. I'm working on a friends car and get to his coil bracket where I notice too large a bolt through the throttle bracket holding the coil bracket on and it's backwards anyways being mounted to the front instead of behind the throttle bracket. so someone obviously stripped out the smaller 3/8 headed bolt and forced a bigger one through. I take it home to weld up the hole and redrill it when I notice the round and oblong holes seem to be reversed on the arms of the bracket. I pull my extra out and it's identical. both the repops online and the bracket on my other 69 are the same with the round threaded hole on the far side of the bracket that would pinch the oblong side of the bracket between the threaded hole and the back side of the throttle bracket. On these, those positions are reversed so if I was to mount them correctly to the back side of the throttle bracket so the metal tangs lock it in place, only one side of the bracket would be against the throttle bracket and the oblong holed far side would just be hanging out in space. That can't be right. About the only thing that makes sense is if those slightly larger round holes aren't actually stripped and I should be using a bolt and nut to hold these on. Were there two versions of these like an early and late thing that one version needs a bolt and nut and the other swapped the hole patterns and used the self tapping bolt only? Both of these brackets came off 68's.

1970 V8 uses a #9419380 screw and a #9422619 U-nut to hold the coil bracket to the throttle bracket.

Thanks, that pointed me in the right direction. I found a picture of a 71 bracket on line with the same setup of the J nut. Again, so much for Inline's PERFECT reproduction and usage claims on all 68-71 brackets being the same. So both of these "68" brackets I have are really 70-71...same overall shape but with the holes reversed on the legs.

I know for a fact they are not .... had a 71 I was trying to make work on my 68 until I found out it was a 71. Got a 68 from a forum member and it worked and looked perfect. They are confusing as heck to look at and try to figure out the difference.

Just one other note for future reference on the differences - the 70/71 has a second bent out tab at the top to lock it from moving, the 68/69 one only has the tab on the bottom.

I have one that I am 99% sure came from a 68, & it looks like the one in parts place picture. not sure what that means if anything at all...

If I remember right the repops were correct for my 68 ... but I was confused because it didn't match the one I had, which turned out to be a 71. The 68 and 71 look much closer than they are, they are almost like a mirror image .. which makes them way more wrong than they look.

well, technically, once installed, you'd never notice the difference other than the extra lock tab which is technically better. the 68/69 only has the bottom one that prevents it from rotating down too far, but nothing stops it from rotating UP too far. the 70/71 has the second tab to lock it in one position. Other than that, you've got a J nut on the 70/71 with the same bolt vs the bolt threading through the back side of the bracket on the 68/69. They mount the same and look the same other than the tab.
