dipstick help
Motor is 1973 455 w/o AC. Purchased a dipstick along with the tube that is installed from the inside of the block (from Ames). The diameter of the tube is consistent from where it exits the block to the top where the dipstick is inserted. The dipstick has the 'cup' at the handle that (I think ?) ought to slide over the end of the tube, but it just doesn't. I am thinking that OEM tubes were swaged down a little at the end to accommodate this 'cup' of the dipstick when it was inserted. Am I only dreaming or is this correct ??? So this dipstick doesn't stay inserted into the tube, and doesn't fit at all over the end of the tube. Ames tech had no good explanation for this. Should I search for an 'original' tube for my motor? Anyone have a 'good/used/serviceable' tube that I can use?? Now is the time since the crank is out for the BOP rear seal. Help!

I purchased the dipstick only back when I put my engine together. Still has the original tube..and I had the same problem. I had to remove that rubber o ring from the cup to get it to go all the way over the tube.
I hated to do that as I liked the idea of the o ring but haven't had any issues with it blowing out.

Good information, guys. Just what I needed. "Original" is not so important, but squared-away is. I'll give that rubber seal delete a shot. Thanks PY forum, too !

Mold yourself a smaller O ring / cup seal so to speak with silicone sealer.
Remove the O ring , oil up the top of the tube and pack the cup with sealer and install it just about all the way. When the sealer sets up pull the stick out and trim up the excess sealer.

Greg and Scott: Do your original dipstick tubes have a swaged-down end where the stick is inserted?

I'll have to check when I get home tonight. I don't recall there being any size reduction at the end of the dipstick tubes on my Pontiac engines.

I just checked mine and there is a slightly reduced area starting about 1.5 inches or so from the end. I never noticed it before.
My dipstick is a very light interference fit without the o ring but wouldn't go on enough to stay with the o ring in place.
