Dataway , I "think". the consensus on yours was a Zone Inventory ordered car that went to a storage lot in Arkansas..... and waited on a buyer for a while.
Beyond that .... No way to know from that single BHC

If you can bump your thread I will look it all over again.

Just wanted to clarify that statement a bit more. So it doesn't get scrambled too far out of context by a casual reader or speed reader.

We only have a small handful of 1969 -Newer invoices reflecting ENG / DEV with 35-997 designation.

We have far numerous 1969-Newer invoices reflecting other Departments / Categories within PMD Motherland with 35-997 designation.

Keith is exactly correct. I have a 68 GTO that is Pontiac built with VIN 100110 - 110th V8 car produced (not 110th GTO). It has a date code of 08-09 on the cowl data plate. This was day 1 of production for 68 GTOs and I have never found a 68 GTO with an earlier VIN. I find the date code interesting as it changed not long afterward to a Month/Week system (e.g. 10A for 1st week October)

Just thinkin',that the major car shows usually happen in Jan, Feb, etc. That's why I was thinking maybe a show car, something used as "filler" to fill up the display.

I don't know 68's very well but a Pontiac plant VIN of 339xxx means 239,000th 1968 V8 equipped car assembled at the home plant. So the July invoice date sounds close to the likely build date of a home plant car with such a high VIN.

That’s 4 weeks before it was invoiced, the short end of normal for a zone car.

Concerning Dataways car , the J in the invoice number box of BHC indicates a Zone Car in 1968.
Most Zone Inventory cars will be xx-991
Most Zone Use cars will be xx-992

xx-992 is not necessarily 100% exclusive to Zone Use , and the 99x segment can change depending on the stage of billing. We really don't know every exact detail about how many possible billings existed per this type of car - from start to finish - in 1968.

It appears from other case studies that every time a car made a move or changed purpose , a new billing was created. For 1968 and Older billings , so far , we have only seen 1 specimen still on file per car.
For 1969 and Newer billings , we have seen as many as 3 specimens still on file per car.

Dataways car likely had at least 1 other prior billing , and 1 or 2 more billings after this copy.

The J , xx-992 , along with the 21% discount , and the time lapse from build date to invoice date , indicate a car with prior use.
The total sum of those factors = Zone Use by Zone Employee , at minimum.
There could be other factors , but they are not available to us .
Any other prognosis would be speculation.

On this 35-997 car
The V , in invoice number box , is an Internal PMD Motherland Use Code.
Only used for the Motherland Michigan plant.
The V , and the 35-997 , both apply to any car that was used for anything at PMD Motherland.

This was most likely the 2nd Billing on this car.
We have no way to know what it did or where it went from this point.
But its first tour of duty was complete at this billing.

Based on the short time frame from body build to billing as mentioned by North , and the time frame in general , likely was NOT used for any engineering or development scenario.

To speculate from previous case studies , most likely a company car for a PMD Brass.
Potentially racked up necessary miles quickly as possible - for personal purchase - or for an arranged purchase by someone else .
3 months or 3000 miles on that program.

The Big Brass Boys could go up to $5000 MSRP on cars back then.
They left a little room on this one.
Sort of part of my thinking towards an ensuing arranged purchase.

I've managed as much as 38% (on a series of Suburbans): 18% employee discount, plus the mileage discount, plus "past model year" discount.

This would be on vehicles I ordered, racked up maximum miles during the allotted timeframe, and then purchased when they came out of service.

Dang Keith , you played the full ticket on those deals !
Some positions do have their rewards .

The only job I ever had with decent perks was when I was DJ'ing at topless bars in the 90's.
Lower mileage units were few and far between though. ahem
Most had previous bodywork, or needed it.
