Anybody have any pictures of what the original fuel tank insulation pad looks like installed? Or do you car to share what you did with yours? Trying to decide if I want to put the original paper backed type in, of do something else.

Originals are not "paper backed".

No kidding? I always thought it was similar to the material used on the floors. That I know was paper backed.
Interesting. Could have sworn I saw a picture of one with paper backed insulation. I'll do some digging

There were a few designs probably due to different suppliers. The current design has an adhesive. Those are the ones currently on the market. The originals were wider and had nothing on them. I happen to have had 1 for decades and have been trying to find its match but it has not been easy. The last original one I saw was part of a pair that sold for almost $200.00 a few years ago on Ebay.

I probably need to correct myself regarding the width as I have seen wide ones and narrow ones. All of the NOS ones I have had in the past 30+ years were wide. I have also found that the part number was also superseded numerous times. Construction changed over the years as well. Again, probably due to different suppliers.

use a material very similar to the floor sound deadner...

my 68 ragtop gto had a large pad ,,, no strip stuff ...

the 70 Lemans just parted had a large pad also....

hmmm ... plant differences ?? mine are 3 out of 4 fremonts

instead of a paper top it seems to have a clear film

and

they were big sheets ....18 x 30 ?

I will get one out for pics from a 68 350 HO 4 speed convert I have in the shop for repairs... gas tank being one of them and dash cluster swap ... and seat
reapir ... and front brakes ... and .....

I always thought it looked very similar to roofing (tar) paper only a tad brown.

Now that you mentioned it I do recall seeing pads sometimes but not always. I also recall seeing material like the pads only in smaller patches. I cannot recall exactly but something like 1 to 2 inches by 3 to 4 or so inches placed in several spots on the top of the tank.

Here’s a couple pics of my original gas tank and insulation pad when dropped. The insulation had a clear cellophane type material on side that faced the tank and was black tar type material, like the floor insulation. The tank pad looked in good shape when first removed in the photo, but was extremely brittle and easily broke apart every time I handled/moved it.
My 68 was Arlington built.

Exactly. I have two of his and they are just like the original that came off my '68. Black, tar paper like substance with a clear plasting lining bonded to the material. I haven't seen him around here for quite a while but he used to hang out on the Oldsmobile forums as '70Post'..

I'm still here!! Greg, for one, has one or two of my Gas Tank Pads, along with a few hundred other folks with GM A-body cars (and a couple of mid-60's Catalina owners). A great material that duplicates the original look/feel/etc pretty well.

Glad to see you're still at it Patton....and I do have two of your pads. If I had another car that needed one, I wouldn't hesitate to get another.
