68 Bonneville Fuel Tank
Have a severly rusted 68 Bonneville fuel tank that needs to be replaced. Does anyone know if the 68 Impala fuel tank would work?

It may work but it is not the same and it has a smaller capacity.

New fuel tanks for our B body cars are difficult or impossible to find, unless you get a good used one.

I think I'm going to try the Impala tank. I need to check the sending unit resistive values of the different sending units to make sure the gauge will work. May have to replace the tank neck but we'll see. Really tough finding parts for these cars.....

How did it work out? Impala tank is 24 gallons and Pontiac tank is 26.5. But I wonder if the impala tank is a different width. The 65-70 Pontiac has exhaust tailpipes running inboard of the frame resulting in a narrow but long tank. Maybe the impala tank is more like the A bodies with the exhaust outboard of the frame with a wider and shorter tank.

Car is at the body shop now. I came up with a really nice 66 tank. Same tank except for the filler neck and a slight difference of the tank angle where the neck is soldered in. I'll fit it when the car comes back and fab up a new filler neck.

I've been having a fuel sender issue on my 69 Cat convertible so I've had the tank in and out a few times. I can't help but think the tank placement has a Pinto feel to it! The back edge of the tank is literally less than an inch from the back of the car and below the bumper. Won't take much of a rear ender to dump fuel on the road!
