Hello all,my buddy and I each have an untaped 30# jug of R-12.He contacted a company called RefrigerantFinders that advertises that they buy large quantities.They quoted him 500$ for each 30# jug and they pick up. Does anyone know if that is a fair price? I know the small cans go for about 30$ each. Thanks

That sounds pretty light. The last 2 jugs I sold I got $1000.00 each for and I put them on Craig's list. Same guy bought both for cash and they were sold in an hour. This was several years ago. The demand may be down as fewer and fewer cars use it and still drive down the road.

I would say whatever you can get for it. I bought a 30lb jug of it for $100 a few years back as the guy just wanted it gone. If you can get $500 and don't have to do anything for it nor regret having done so, I'd say go for it.

$1000 is tempting, feel free to try it. You've got nothing to lose by advertising on craigslist for a few weeks to see if anyone bites.

Thanks all,I worked in GM dealers for 50 years and I know they were about 1,000$ with all the extra taxes toward the end. There is a place in Cleveland that only offered 250$ for 30lb so maybe 500$ is the going rate.

Better check local laws before you sell it. Here you have to be "Licensed" to even buy a 30 LB container of R134A. I have several small cans of R12 that I'm going to hang on too "Just in case"

Last I checked you do not need a license to buy R134a in California. You do for R12 and have for many years, but that means nothing to you as a seller. I have bought and sold R12 on craigslist repeatedly over the years with no issues whatsoever. Nobody cares. I have a good stash of R12 that I will be hanging on to, as I have repeatedly found good deals at swap meets, on craigslist, etc.. No chance I'd pay a grand for a cylinder even if I was out and needed more. That said, if a company is offering $500, that means it probably is in fact worth a grand on the market. Remember that a company is buying it to make a profit themselves, so they will never offer you even close to fair market value. Don't delude yourself, these companies are not in it to help you out, they're in it to profit themselves.

You can either post it for a high price ($1000+) and see what responses you get, or sell it for best offer and see what people offer you. The way I see it, it has a lot of value to guys who don't want to convert their cars to new crap(I sure as hell won't convert anything of mine), so if there is even a small chance that you might need it in the future, keep it. It probably won't drop much in value at this point, but could steadily gain over the years as the supply of even reclaimed R12 dries up.

Yeah, but in California you have to be licensed to fart.

Soon in this state we will soon have to be licensed to buy 134A in amounts larger than 1 lb. That means we can still buy the 12 oz. containers for quite a while with no restrictions. The R12 has the usual restrictions and high value.

After reading this thread, an ePay price of $76 for six 18 ounce cans of R12 didn't sound so bad, so I bought them. The cans say they contain slightly under 17 ounces each- but if it gets my old air conditioner going I'll be happy.

I had 2 of my small cans in my hoard empty out, so I sold all the small cans, I found a 30 lb'r w/ 22 lbs in , got it for $300. I don't trustable small cans anymore.
