Alternator CS144 or CS130
Anybody know what the differences are between these two?
Anybody know which cars came from the factory with them?

CS130 and CS144 are internally regulated alternators, the CS144 is a 140A unit that has a larger case and is larger that anything that originally came on our cars, but can be made to fit. I compare the two when I was looking for an alternator and went big...
I bought a CS144 from Rock Auto that was listed for a 90's Caprice IIRC, and had to do a few mods (change clocking of terminals, grind a casting lug, and modify the adjustment slot of my alternator bracket) but it fit well after that. I also swapped the serpentine pulley with a stock V groove pulley, but still haven't finished the car not sure if the V groove pulley is going to work with a heavy load or if it will slip. The appeal of these 2 units (130 & 144) is that they can put out lots of current at idle speeds compare to the older alternators that require RPM to come up before being able to deliver full current.

Cs130D is about 105 amps and going to be enough alt for most old cars converted to efi. It was STD on most full size gm from 94 to 2000. Usually had a serpentine pulley. Almost same size as older 10/12si. Single v belt is going to struggle to transmit the 3+ hp required for 130+ amps from the larger cs144

CS130 has a lingering reputation for seizing the rear bearing due to excessive heat. I've seen both sides of this issue--I had an alternator fail as I was driving. Made a hellacious noise. When I pulled up to a gas pump, the engine stopped and it wouldn't crank until I popped the belt off--the alternator locked the entire engine. I've also had them last 100,000 miles+.
CS130D is a MAJOR re-design of the older CS130. Far as I know, they're reliable. Internal cooling fan--no visible fan by the pulley. CS144 is the same vintage as the original CS130, but with a bigger case and no reputation for failing the rear bearing. The numbers represent rotor diameter--130mm vs. 144mm. Some CS130 applications are housing-specific. The CS130 in my '92 and '93 Lumina can't be interchanged with newer or older stuff, or even a generic CS130 because my application has a "special" alternator housing designed to mate with a cold-air intake for cooling. |

Ok, so the 144 is larger in size. The 130 seems to be close to the size of my original alt. The car doesn't get much use so we would just have to see how long the bearings last. The 144 seems to be a couple years older design than the 130. I think I can find what I need by going with one made for a Chevy deisel pickup.
This is all just in case I have to swap out alternators.

OOOOoops. Correction, that's stator diameter, not rotor diameter.
Thanks, Stellar. |

A CS-144 fit my '66 GTO perfectly with no mods required, other than swapping out the serpentine pulley. The old V-belt pulleys have the same shaft dia.

I posed this before the outage the other day.
I used an alternator from an 84 z28 HO. 92 amp and not pulley swap needed. Is it a good alternative. |

That the one that I bought also. The 84 z28 12si. I'm not sure it's going to work for me. It's the reason I started this thread.

Well apparently my 12si may not play well with my new fuel injection.
So went to the wrecking yard and picked up a cs130. Now I have to wire it in. I made sure to bring home the plug with it. Some applications use a resister wire if you are not running with a "gen" light in the dash. Non issue. I read something about a diode if running a 6a MSD box but I've been running one for a long time so I don't think that's needed either. So does anybody have a link to a wiring diagram for going from a 12si alt to a cs130 alt?

What application? Anyone use one of these - off of 04 Yukon XL 2500 8.1 liter - AD244 Alternators? 180 or 244 amps. |

Think I got it figured out. I have to go back and find a plug that's got a "L" wire and one for the "S" wire. Looks like a pretty simple three wire hook up.
