Doubtful. I've called a couple of times this week and can't even get a return call. Go by? My schedule hasn't allowed that recently. Hopefully tomorrow if Mom cooperates (dementia)

I did contact Hagerty and they said they could be no help and suggested a lawyer. Hagerty has been a bit disappointing. They hired an adjuster to write the initial estimate (poorly done) and then he dropped of the Earth and Hagerty's response has been simply that when a supplement is needed simply have the shop send it directly to them. Nice. No need to employ an adjuster anymore. I'm on my own.

Basically it seems I'm screwed.

He's got the car. If I ask for it back I suspect I'll be presented with a bill that would resemble extortion. If I get it back, I suspect that I'm screwed with the insurance company and any ability to file a supplement to cover what'll be needed to fix the lousy aftermarket panel fit. Not to mention finding a new shop and then them starting over.

No....no matter what, I'll not be driving it AGAIN for the summer.

A few years ago I had to seize my old 72 Formula from a shop after a similar time as you. It was partially disassembled and rendered non drivable. The decision leading up to that was based on a few things. No end in sight and progress stalled. Shop appeared signs of financial hardship. Owner evasive. He did not own building, so move could be quick. I weighed odds of getting successfully done to other extreme of car and shop flat disappearing. Car was easy part out at that point. I am not sure this helps, but I put probabilities and risks on the table and made a gut choice after that. It was a 5K loss. Dude will pay karma at some point. He also robbed others. Left town. So car might have went poof if not seized. BTW, show up unannounced, with extra male bodies, tow truck, and U-Hual or PU for parts. Walk in like you own the joint and take your property with authority, NO discussion will succeed at this point. Don't threaten or get physical except in defense. But be boss. Do business and quick. He may call buddies. Tell him FU if needed as you drive off.

I believe my problem is just the opposite. PG Collision is busy as hell and my car, with it's ****ty aftermarket 1/4 and door skin that don't fit right and they don't want to take the time to make it fit. Why putz with this when they can throw a hood and front fender on an Altima and get that money with much less effort. I believe my car is taking up the slack when they've got little else to do. When I can actually talk to him I'll find out what his thought is on completion and then find out about simply getting it back and how big of a financial hit that'll be.

I'm surprised to hear that the aftermarket fitment is that bad and something they are not used too. Aftermarket panels are used for newer cars also and don't fit like originals but they make them work. Chinese parts for a modern Camry fit terrible also, is my point, but in the end, you can make it look good.

Just an idea....

Contact Hagerty and tell them that you want a check for the full value of your car and they can keep what is at the body shop. Since the body shop can't/won't fix it - it must be a total loss.

Not sure it will work, but it just might.

The longer you let it go on, the worse it gets. I would be screaming at Haggerty, unless the body shop was your choice. I would go down and confront the owner, demand a completion date of 30 days or you will remove your car. Tell him to call the adjuster now and work out partial payment with your insurance company since you have no doubt he will not finish within 30 days given his past performance.

Talk to a lawyer. Usually it's free for the first time. Then get ahold of local or State law enforcement BEFORE you try and get the car out of the shop. They will either help you or not. It's all a crap shoot but worth the try. Old Goat 67 went thru that with his 67 GTO just for a paint job.

I would go to the shop and see what the balance owed on the car is. I would pay it and take it out. He probably wants it out as bad as you do. Its taking up valuable space. You are right, the quick repairs will always take priority.

Tell shop owner you are taking it home until you can find a restoration shop to fix the car the way you want it fixed. If nothing is owed on the car I doubt you will need to get law enforcement or lawyers involved. As others have mentioned, act now and dont waste anymore time.

Collision shops are for your daily drivers, restoration shops are for your classic cars. There is a difference

If it’s not too far contact the AMD installation center in Cleveland Georgia about your panel replacement. They worked miracles for me. Then that just leaves you with paint

What exactly has been done up to this point? Is the owner getting mixed signals from you and the insurance company (i.e. you expecting a complete repaint vs. the insurance co. paying for a partial paint and blend)?

It sounds like a complete disconnect somewhere. Money is usually the motivator. Not enough money, no motivation to finish. You know the shop guys would rather be working on your car than fitting GoldenStar sheet metal on Toyotas and whatever else rolls in. You are an insurance job and insurers rank their shops on job duration and timely delivery to the customer. I am surprised that Haggerty has left you out to dry.

I had a new deck lid installed, rear quarter/sail panel joints smoothed, rear filler panel media-blasted and surfaced, patch panels welded in the rear window glass frame, the class channel medial blasted, the entire roof taken down to bare metal and then painted from the roof and quarters back in 3 months time and I was having a hissy fit. You should be losing your mind with shop and threatening with every legal recourse you can.

People laugh when I tell them I have State Farm but I have an agreed value policy just like Haggerty and am covered anywhere I choose to drive the car. My recent hood pop-up carnage is an example. State Farm is covering it with no deductible even though a mechanical failure caused it. While waiting for the hood, the shop held up it's estimate for the claim, not knowing what incidentals would be incurred (cut out scoops, install hood pins as recommended by the manufacturer, etc.). State Farm has been up their butt issuing letters requesting estimate paperwork to be filed and the claim to be resolved post-haste. I can't say enough good things about State Farm.
