![]() ![]() Since I can't share my "XXX" Jug, here's the next best thing. 2015 York US30 Nostalgia & Musclecar Madness Show ![]() Of all the cool historic race cars at the reunion, few could top the 1962 Pontiac 421 Super Duty, unrestored and with aluminum panels intact, now owned by Kevin Tingler. Also on hand were members of the Murphy family. Five brothers owned the car, which Max Sterling drove. https://www.hotrod.com/articles/whee...-madness-show/ ![]() Took these at the local car show, what a hunk a nostalgia !!! ![]() Frank

Unrestored? Wow. Hard for me to believe, after witnessing Pontiac aluminum fenders already quite beat up- at the '62 Indy Nationals!

It might have had a face lift since 62 Jack, I think the paint is from the 69 time era.
The Hot Rod article was from Sept. 2016, seems it was sold last year so no longer resides in WV, the pictures I took were on July 6 2014. Stuck my head inside for a better look and just about hyper ventilated smelling the iconic nature of the beast. It was a very rare occasion and experience for me to see a car like this in it's original racing form, I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are some good pics and info at this link, https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0117-26...ite-lightning/ ESTIMATE $125,000 - $150,000 HIGHLIGHTS Super Duty Lightweight Known as the White Lightning Raced by Max Sterling Stock Eliminator winner at 1969 NHRA Springnationals in Dallas, Texas 12.24 E.T. at 102 MPH Unrestored condition 428 CI V-8 engine 421 heads, intake and carburetor 4-speed manual transmission Cragar wheels Documented with letter from NHRA Division 1 Technical director Gregory Xakellis dated December 26, 1967 PHS documents Framed newspaper articles detailing the wins Signed by Arnie 'The Farmer' Beswick Frank

Thanks for the Cool pics!
After seeing the (70?) Firebird do you know if they ran a 69 TA called White Lightning? Knew a guy who raced one called that, wonder now if he had bought it like that or just made one and called it that? (would have been in the 80's last seen it) ![]()

Just real curious WHEN the (69 T/A) stripes were added? Like before the 69 T/A came out?

Not sure about the 69 TA Cliff, I haven't seen it nor have I seen any other Murphy brothers cars, other than whats been posted here.
As for the stripe Mark I think it originated from the Murhpy's, assuming they campaigned the 61 Ventura before the Super Duty. The stripe is visible on it. Frank

Hard to see in that shot , if you invert the colors you can make out the 71 Bird fake fender gills a little below the "White" lettering.

Don't think unrestored would fit the bill. Original black car. About the coolest ordered 62 SD I have seen.

When I hit a show if there are any unrestored older cars there, that's the first place I head, I don't mind looking at a little rust and dirt. If I had a choice of going to a all inclusive unrestored show or a premiere concours restoration show, I want to see the original stuff. Nothing wrong with glitter and gleam, but as they say, "they're only original once", an I dig em that way. Frank

Glasgo likely means his opinion in a more purist-type Day 1 sense.
No doubt it is un-restored though. Still has black jambs , with white overspray in them. i'm not sure why the dash is blue and the interior is Black. but race cars get done the way people want them to be while they race them If it were to be restored - probably the Black on Black Day 1 version would be worth more than restoring it back to race trim with overspray and blue dash. Just a wild guess on my part. all that aside - Car is KilleR just for what it is and its pedigree plus all the aluminum pieces are still intact The predicted auction value is possibly low. |

I am totally into untouched car's also. If I remember correctly, this car had blue Ventura interior, 8 lugs,ALL aluminum, black paint. It could not have been built better. I would love to have it and restore it to its original state. Earl shieb white, and Grand Prix interior are not good enough for this car. Imho

Ah, I understand your sentiments completely, it may very well be more appealing to some, visually and monetarily as well in it's original factory attire.
Be that as it may, surely that would be a big disappointment for myself as well as many others to see this piece of Pontiac racing history erased. ![]() I'd like to see these cars remembered in the flesh, for what they did, the names they made for themselves and notoriety they commanded and deserved. Pretty sure you are correct about the blue interior, the black exterior would have been desirable too, but I am quite content with the Earl Shieb white lol. ![]() The car sold for - $123.000 on 1/6/17. https://www.classiccarratings.com/au...-jan-6-15-9870 A few other pieces of nostalgic eye candy. I like to see these cars representing what they were designed and built for, but at the same time, factory original appearance is very desirable as well. Frank

He is the younger gentleman with the Murphy Brothers in the first two pictures I posted of the 2015 York US30 Nostalgia & Musclecar Madness Show. Kevin purchased the car from Max Sterling who use to drive the car back in the day, and according to Kevin, could still work the slush box quite nicely. If you notice in the one picture I took from the back the of the car it had WV tags on and was driven to the show. Kevin sold the car to someone claiming they were going to put it in a museum, but as you can see it somehow ended up at Mecum. Funny how karma will bite you when you least expect, it sold for way less at Mecum than what the guy gave for it. ![]() Edit: - I hope who ever bought it keeps it in race form. Frank

In late 2010 shortly after Mr. Sterling passed away, there was a fellow named Mcquire(sp) on this forum and the hamb looking for help in selling the 62 plus a a lot of Pontiac parts for his mother or motherinlaw (Max's widow).
My friend Don ( went by the name donpontiac here ) reached out to help, having known Max when he had his shop in MD and owning the 61 White Lightning car for a period of time. Of course I tagged along and snapped some pics in Max's garage in WVin early Jan 2011. An awesome car to say the least. The longer we stayed the more we got the impression that there was going to be a family war over this stuff. Don gave his opinion on how to get the most out of the stuff, but declined to get involved. On a side note I will never forget seeing 2 brand new 68 Ram air heads in the GM boxes just sitting on the shelf mixed with other parts. I also miss my buddy Don and these long rides for Pontiacs and other car related chases, he passed in 2015 |
