Looking for a reference for someone to rebuild a 2004R
Hi all, bought a 2004R from Monster Transmission for my wife's 68 Firebird Convertible in 2013 and now it needs a rebuild. I don't want to deal with Monster again (another story) and would like to deal with someone local. I am in San Antonio but will gladly travel to Dallas or Houston, maybe even LA if needed to get this trans in the hands of the right builder. If anyone has a reference for a respected builder that will do a good job on a mild street rebuild (<400hp) please let me know. I am struggling to find someone in the San Antonio area.

I would suggest Phoenix Transmission in Weatherford, TX. They did a 700R4 for my 37. Fair price, great service, trouble free going on 4 yrs.
Good luck.

Thanks I will give them a call. Another thing I seem to be finding is a lot of shops will only rebuild 700s and not 200s. If anyone else has a reference please let me know.

I have a built stage 2 2004r from Lonnie Dyers at Extreme Automatics in Ohio. I know its not local but shipping wasn't outrageous. Very knowledgeable and great customer service and I drive my car hard and fast and its still going strong for a couple years now.

Thanks Chad. I've decided to go another route but glad to hear from someone that had a good experience with it. A lot of ppl recommend them but I did not have a good experience with it. What was your experience with the TV cable? What carb are you running? How did you set it up? Interested to hear.

Monster does excellent marketing, but their product doesn't seem to be near as good.
Phoenix Trans in Weatherford is an excellent suggestion. Greg and his team have always taken care of my trans issues. Century Automotive in Richmond does great work too. Mike Kurtz has been doing 2004r for the Turbo Buick crowd down there since there was a turbo Buick crowd. http://www.centurytransmission.com/catalog/1 Jack Laswell does trans and other work for several of my friends. Jack Laswell at JL Performance in Rowlett - (972) 412-9000 The problem with the 2004r is the core supply is drying up and if you cant get cores, you cant do a build. The next problem you may encounter is the 2004r requires the correct clearances when assembled. You cant just put it together and have it work right. If you don't set the internal clearances right it wont last long or shift well. Lots of tricks the Guru guys use to make on live that a local "race trans" guy wouldn't do.
