Default Seeking advice on cam replacement

The YU 350 (2-barrel, TH-350) in my '70 Tempest has what I think is a lifter tick. The compression is good and consistent so I'm planning to just replace the cam and lifters (and timing set while I'm at it). The car is bone stock and I'm looking to keep it that way.

Stock cam is the #254, but I'm not aware of anyone reproducing it. Ames offers the #066 cam. Do you think that would be a safe bet? Again, I'm looking to keep the car stock and reliable. Will going to the #066 requiring any tweaking of the Rochester 2Jet?

The Summit 2800 is a popular stockish replacement for the 350’s. I have had one in a 400 for years. Works great, but a bit “small” for a 400. I’ve been using mine with stock valve springs and pressed in studs for almost 30 years with no issues. No speed demon. But will be quite a bit better than what you have now.

X2 Kyle...the Summit 2800 kit. Its a mild 204/214 at .400"/.422". It will work with stock valve springs too, although, its not a bad idea to replace them with new. You shouldn't need to do anything to the carb, other than adjusting the idle mixture and idle speed.

If you wanna stay with the low lift Pontiac clones, a Melling SPC-4 or SPC-5 should work. The 066 & 067 cams were used in some 350's. The 066 was used in the '74 GTO 350.

For what you're doing Kyle, the 066 sounds like a good replacement. I would degree it in properly to be sure where it's at, and with the fresh timing set, I think you'll be happily cruising again in no time. You might even notice a hint more 'oomph' from the venerable 350. And as others said, I don't think you'll need to do much more than fine tuning the carb.

All good.

Wow, thanks for all the great suggestions, guys! That Summit package with lifters looks like a bargain at $115! Good to know that any of these suggestions would be good options.

Hello there. Just wondering how the cam swap went. I JUST ordered the same summit 2800 kit for the $114.xx

Very excited to see how much different a different cam and 4bbl upgrade feels. Got a 1972 intake from an original Pontiac parts collector for $100 and a 750cfm (I hear they're actually 735cfm) Quadrajet. I've had the car for 28 years and it was my uncle's before that. Always been a 2bbl 350 car with ice cold A/C. Great vacuum for power breaks! Actually the only reason I'm doing the cam is that having 3.55 rear gears; a Pontiac 350 expert really pushed me to swap the cam. He said I wouldn't need to do a cam with the 4bbl change. Then after hearing I've upgraded to the 3.55 rear end, he almost demanded that I change the cam. Said I'd be much happier (the car will really wake-up!) with a summit 2800 cam and that rear gear.

Other than pulling the front of the engine off (water pump, timing set, etc.) what else had to come off to swap out the cam? Last time the engine saw work was 1990 when my dad and I rebuilt the engine (outside of the car). I would assume the radiator needs to come out, but it is a LONG engine compartment ahead of the engine. Any interference with the center supports etc.?
Thanks
-Matt

Intake and valley pan come off, so prepare with necessary gaskets. And yes, timing cover and timing chain come off. I've never done one in the car, but if you take the radiator out it looks like it will be very close to enough room. If not, the center support/latch assembly is a pretty easy removal. I'm pretty sure you will have tons of room if you have to remove the center latch support piece.

I am guessing no AC, right?

I always enjoyed the 2800 cam in my 350. No complaints from this guy, until the race bug bit. 14's are doable with the 2800 cam in a 350.

It IS an A/C car actually. Other than removing the compressor and bracket is there something else to concider?

I didn't know if there was an AC condenser that would need to be removed along with the radiator. There is a lot of room from the engine to the nose without the radiator, just wasn't sure if a smidge more would be needed.
