Yeah, that looks pretty much like the originals except they left the weird 'stub' off. Hard to explain if you haven't seen it but the originals had a short pipe spliced into the tailpipe that was supposed to cancel drone. It was done away with since after they rusted out, they tended to melt the tail light. In '69 they added an actual resonator back there.

So was the step down adaptor & chrome tip a factory option, or was that a dealer installed item? Always looked kinda aftermarket to me.

I really don't know. I never took much notice as I never really liked the chrome tips for '66 through '69 GTOs.
I believe that they were a factory option but I would imagine that the dealer could also install them?
