Chad, thanks for correcting my error! You are absolutely right, de-ice instead of defog. That’s what I get for posting after a few vodka and tonics!!!
And thanks for the clearing up the year it changed.

ok.
A great deal of what I was doing was trying to compile all of the information from this thread into one (semi?) sensible post;
If you noticed, I have some question marks/points where I am unclear on what makes the item unique compared to other years.

I kind of disagree with #20. I think all air cleaners were the same from Van Nuys (except for decal and filter), plug was removed for California carburetor vehicles. And all air cleaners from Norwood were the same (unless it was going to California. Same deal on the filter and decal).

There were '70 dual snorkel F body aircleaners without the vent hole & the style made with the hole and the plastic plug, I have examples of each.

On items like the heater control, a very similar deal happened on '72 Pontiac A-body models. Not sure I'd try & nail down the style of heater control as an exact 70/71 versus '72 thing, as the control was such a minor detail that supplies often were allowed to dwindle before the new style was used.

Similar deal on the AC control heads and automatic shifter lenses used on '80 Birds, it took a while to transition over to the new style bigger font lenses. My Oct '79 built Turbo SE was one of the very first out of Van Nuys plant after the production delay of turbo cars. It has the style of font of lense on the AC control & the AT selector that were used for many years. The more modern, larger font AC control with the fan symbol & matching larger font auto shifter lense began to be installed in mid November '79 around the same time the first '80 Pacecars were built. Pacecars of course received their own style lenses with the red prism in the end of the lense to diffuse the light with a red glow.

That's what I meant. Van Nuys builds had the vent hole covered with a rubber plug that was removed when equipped with the California carburetor. And Norwood builds typically had no vent hole, but "may" have built one or two headed to California, needing the hole.

Sure seem to be too hard to be rubber. they also dont seem to degrade over time like thin rubber.

38 on list. Says plastic valence on 70 was a one year only part? Learned me something new...

I decided to take it one step further and look up a few more. Looks like 1970 and 1971 non-Trans Am were each one year only parts for the Control, but for Trans Am they list them as using the same part number for both years. Maybe the wood grain finish changed between those two years? Not sure if that was the case, but it appears something did change between 1970 and 1971 for all but TA.

7312272 8.849 F/6-F/8 exc. A.C .......CONTROL (exc. Trans. Am.) 1 1970 1970 8-38
7312182 8.849 F/A.C.-- (9.273) CONTROL (exc. Trans. Am.) 1 1970 1970 8-35

7935372 8.849 All F exc. A.C. or Trans. Am CONTROL 1 1971 1971 8-38
7935482 8.849 All F/A.C CONTROL (exc. Trans. Am.) (use w/water 1 1971 1971 8-35

7930582 8.849 All F Trans. Am exc. A.C CONTROL (marked de-ice) 1 1970 1971 8-35
7930592 8.849 All F/A.C CONTROL (w/Trans. Am.) (use w/water 1 1970 1971 8-35

Both plants used the same pick code for the Trans Am air cleaner, so they were the same unit. Like the Ram Air air cleaner.

my understanding was that L74 aircleaners had the hole plugged, but that Norwood/L78 cars never had the hole - that was the intent of that single point.
I believe this aircleaner is the original one for my acquired engine (which should have been built within 24 hours of my car*.)

This aircleaner has no hole, and still has the date stamp of "3 20 70" clearly visable.

* if by chance this aircleaner isn't from my replacemnt engine, it's from a Formula built just beforehand - I have the info recorded somewhere, but cannot recall where I stashed it.

I took a small leap there for two reasons:
1) it was on pre-production, and IIIRC some early production cars.
It also is listed in the 1970 Firebird suppliment.
My guess is that it was the intended valance setup - but probably costed more, and had too many teething problems.
2) I was looking to be corrected with some sort of air-tight proof.

Looks like a nice '70 Formula air cleaner. Was it an HD unit?

I just verified that my car's, and my spare heater controls do indeed say de-ice;
so was the same wording used for hvac controls on an AC car?

I am also interested in knowing if anyone her has a nice picture (or three) showing the yearly different non-TA dash insert;
I would own examples of all three, but just to collect for fun, they have gotten expensive;
The attached photo has a 1972 on top, and a 1970 on the bottom.
The 1971 dash inserts (on cars that I have seen which were unquestionably unchanged) had a greyish wood effect which is why I called it a bleached birchwood).

wasn't that option just for the filter?

I contemplated running a PHS on my car's replacement engine, but PHS has gotten expensive;
I'd totally do it if there was a cheaper option which didn't include the whole packet - say just an emailed jpg/pdf scan of the options sheet.
