Folding top frame color?
The Z & R Restoration Guide says the folding top frames were painted gloss black. Mine looks closer to semi-gloss black. Maybe the definition of "gloss" has changed since the 60's?

I have a 1969 GTO and Firebird converts that I used Krylon semi-flat black on both of the top frames which look correct to me...any others to chime in?

Both of mine looked like semi-flat black before I had stripped them

Thanks. At least we have one vote for definately not gloss.
Here is a photo of the male hinge....bottom side that is more protected from the elements. To my eye it seems closer to semi-gloss but could easily be semi-flat as well. The heater cover is semi gloss for reference. The gloss level on the formed edge of the male hinge is what has me leaning towards semi gloss. ?? I will look at it again in the sunlight tomorrow. Have to make a decision as I plan on painting and assembling the top this weekend.  Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk |

I've worked on and been around quite a few 1960-s GM verts, never seen the frames flat black, always had some gloss. Maybe depending on which plant the car was built?

I think a semigloss or a bit more is the correct look for a top frame. Sort of between the chassis black and the glossier air cleaner black.

Semi-gloss looks correct to me. Pictured is an original 69 top frame however it has not been dusted

My GTO and Bonnie ragtops (my others have sun faded top frames) have really nice original frames and they have that exact sheen.

When I restored my top frame 10+ years ago I used Plasticote Super Enamel Satin Black (T-8). It may not be exact to original (before n after photo) but I liked the way it came out and thought it had the right amount of sheen/gloss. The original finish looks a little more “gray/less-black”, but that may just be the “patina” after 40 years.
