Anyone know the specs for the AFB fuel line flare? 37 or 45 deg, single vs double flare? Thx in advance

Going to be 45 degree double flare, the fittings used were inverted flare fittings commonly used for fuel lines and transmission fluid lines on cars back then.
A pair of '66 GTO AFB carbs with 3/8" inverted flare fittings, made up from steel brake line tubing sourced from my local NAPA.

Thanks for the info. Being that this is just fuel line and not high pressure brake line, any reason it couldn't be single flare as opposed to double flare? Just curious.

I've never seen inverted flare fittings use anything but a double flare on the tubing.
Tri-Power reproduction aluminum fuel lines are all double flare. I see no reason not to double flare all of your inverted flare hard lines. I doubt a 45 degree single flare would seal very well, you probably need both layers of material to crush down and form a good seal.

It's not about sealing it's about strength and why all brake and fuel lines are double flared, not single. Single flaring brake lines or even fuel lines is a recipe for disaster.........Cliff

The 37 degree versus 45 degree angles have to do with material.
Some 40 years ago, we supplied custom fuel lines for tripowers, dual quads, etc. Some enthusiasts were starting to ask about stainless lines. Called a stainless tubing supplier, to order 5/16 and 3/8 stainless tubing. The customer service rep (engineer) asked what my intentions were. After I explained, he told me ALL (up to that time) automotive fittings used a 45 degree angle, and that stainless could not be flared safely more than 37 degrees. The company refused to take my order. Guess they were worried about liability. After that conversation, I talked to a couple more engineers, with the same result, so I gave up on trying to supply stainless fuel lines. Fittings for stainless are 37 degrees. Jon

I believe they are 37 degrees. -3, -4 AN brake lines and fittings are 37 degree.

Not sure I understand how that is possible. If the factory brake and fuel lines are 45 degree DF, and you buy a stainless brake line kit, then the stainless has to be 45* DF, right?

When you buy a stainless steel brake line kit they're not expecting you to replace all the factory fittings with 37-degree parts. These kits are made to replace OEM steel brake lines with 45-degree double flares.
If you're starting from scratch on a race car you might be using AN 37-degree fittings for the brake lines but certainly not on a street car that's already set up for 45-degree inverted flare fittings.

Yes, I wasn't thinking of OE replacement SS brake lines. They would have to use the matching 45 degree double flare. Possibly they are using a slightly different SS alloy with a little copper in it to make the flares without cracking? If you really want better info, I would give Inline Tube a call and talk to them. I will research this a little at PRI if I get the time.

Bought Stainless brake lines for my 67 bird. My wilwood master cylinder and adjustable proportioning valve required modifications to the lines. 45 degree double flares are near impossible in a home shop. Ended up annealing the ends of the lines to be able to get a double 45 degree flare without cracking. Ill never use stainless lines again. It was a real B;#ch. Nicop for me from then on.
