Default Removing side bullet mirrors

So I got some new mirrors from Anvil Auto. Just the new glass with Friction assembly. https://anvilauto.com/products/unive...ror-glass.html

I go to take my mirrors off and there is no set screw???? So is there a different style of mirror with no set screw? Or did the guy who painted it decide to "smooth" over it like he did the door handles and rear trunk hinge cover?

Any assistance here is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

Wow that sounds like a cruel hoax that body guy pulled!! Since there is really no way to access the mirrors from the inside of the door panels, you may have to make your best guess and drill thru the filler that is covering the set screw. You can also return those new mirror assemblies at $249 and just buy the actual mirror glass from NAPA. they are $20 each so you will save $200 or so. To replace just the mirror glass while the mirror assembly is on the car: you must use a hammer and gently break the mirror glass and then pull the pieces out from the mirror frame. The glass is just glued in at the factory. Then use silicone glue to install the new mirror glass. You will have to use masking tape to hold the new mirrors in place until the silicone dries. Dave

I got them for the friction adjustment, mine just flops around and my door panels are custom so no room for joystick. but thank you for telling me stuff sucks lol.

Totally mean that in a good natured way. Totally get what your saying.

Looking at your photo, I'd pull the door trim and make sure they are actually from a Firebird and not a Monte Carlo etc, that mounts using nuts instead of the mounting plate. They are easy to tell simply by looking at them but that small pic doesn't show clearly, but they do appear taller than standard.

yep! purpose of the anvil auto ones is to toss the cable set up! and they are a quality assembly. but yeh, easy to replace just the mirror if one chooses.

As mentioned above, someone may have swapped G-body mirrors onto your bird (with no set screw or bracket). Pic below shows height difference, yellow is G-body on my Malibu and the other is 2nd gen bird.

That is an awesome pic! Now if that is true I can get them off the doors but not sure if the new mirrors will fit them

If your bird was Standard base model, I believe in 73 still, Sport Mirrors were an option. Chrome old school drivers was standard and rarely seen. anymore. So maybe the story of your tall adders. I would eventually upgrade to correct if it were mine, but most folk will never notice either.

Excellent point!! I bet that is it. Pretty sure my bird is as base as it got, which is why I dont mind hacking innit as much. I will probably fix down the road but right now just want a drivers mirror flopping around!

Thanks Chris, Don't worry about your computer challenges, I just turned my monitor upside down and the car looks as great as ever...Navojo Orange is always bad ass! Mirror is cool! I'm going to try to make my G body mirrors work with my new glass at least for now. I looked up the OER glass part number and it fits firebirds AND Malibu's so there is hope!

I have the same mirrors on my 71. They mount with two studs like mentioned before, and sit taller on the car. I actually like them more than the stock mirrors. Because they're taller, you can see around and above the quarter panel more than the stockers.

One thing to take note of when using other model mirrors on 2nd gen birds is that the plastic mounting plates for each model car are angled to make the stock mirrors for each kind of car sit level and when mixing/matching various mirrors on various models of cars the mirrors can end up looking "funny" because they're not level as well as being taller or shorter than the stock mirrors used on a particular model. If you stand to the rear of the car on the side and look at the mirror it's noticeable when the mirror isn't level. The mirror will look tipped. You can sand the plastic gasket thingies to make the mirrors sit more level. The mirrors on the black car being discussed here look to be tipped in toward the windows but it would be more noticeable if the pics were taken from behind.
