78 bonneville 400 engine mounts
was looking for engine mounts for a 78 Bonneville with a Pontiac 400. do the A body mounts from a 78 grand prix 301 or a 78 firebird with a 400 work? I know the A body and F body mounts are different, I was just wondering if the B body mounts were too..and if you know, do you have the corresponding part numbers? thank you

thanks 64 speed, but im looking for the mounts that bolt to the engine, not the mount on the frame. I know that that mount is a clamshell mount, chevy style.

I "think" B-body is different from A body and definitely not the same as F body, |

I don't think the 75 Cat will work on a 78 b-body, since they downsized the B's in 77.

Surely someone here knows or maybe an archive search is in order. |

I looked in my parts catalog: 496858 is the right one and 496859 is the left.
They fit 76-77 A-body (probably 75 A too). 77-79 B. 80-81 A, B, and G.

So, is it safe to say that there are only 2 types of brackets, one type came in 2nd gen Birds, & the other type came in all the other Pontiac body styles that came with Pontiac V8's ? Or, are there other brackets that fit non-Birds ? My first experience with these was back in around 2008. I attempted to put a 455 into a '75 Ventura. I was given a set of brackets. Don't know what they came in. They set the engine much too high. The TH400 hit the top of the trans tunnel long before the trans could be raised high enuff to sit on the trans crossmember. I've read that the '75 Vent has basically the same front subframe as the 2nd gen Birds. So, I assume that the Bird brackets would work in the '75-'77 Vent. But, at the time, I didn't know there was a difference in the brackets. I gave up on that project, when I bought a race-ready '74 Vent. So, I never learned any more about the brackets, at that time. Actually didn't learn about the difference in brackets, 'til after I joined this forum. Like many others, I've learned a lot here. Wish I'd had the money to put more of what I've learned into a few Pontiac projects. |

No, not 2. I never counted them before, but looking back at the catalog, I see 4 different Pontiac engine mount brackets, with different part numbers, from 75-81. There's the 75-81 F, the 75-77 A, the 75-76 B which also fits 75-77 G (grand prix), and the 77-79 B, which also fits 80-81 a, b and g.
For example, I pulled a 455 out of a 76 GP, with the brackets still on it. I'm going to put it in a 73 GTO, which is the Lemans body. I'm going to use the 75-up clamshell type motor mount setup, which uses engine brackets. I thought the brackets would be the same, since the Lemans is an a-body, and the GP is considered a "special" a-body in those years. But, I've learned not assume anything, so I checked the parts book, and sure enough the GP brackets are different. So, I had to get some Lemans brackets. So, as you can see, you really need to look up the numbers for your specific model of Pontiac to make sure you get the right brackets.

Unfortunately, my parts catalog doesn't list the 75, or the 76 X body, so I don't know.

The Class Racer Info site shows that the 350 Pontiac was only available in the F & A bodies, in '75. http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...px?ENGINE=2096 Buick 350 is shown for X-bodies. Don't know how accurate this info is. http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...spx?ENGINE=734 Here's some bogus info. This article says several times that this '75 Vent has a Pontiac 350 engine. But, you can see from the pic of the engine that it is definitely NOT a Pontiac. https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2016/0...ura-sj-sprint/ I've read that those front sub frames are basically the same as 2nd gen Birds. So, Bird brackets should work. But, I don't know if the correct holes are there, for the Pontiac motor mount location. Might have to drill some holes or weld 'em in. Anybody know if those cars have holes for Pontiac engine mounts ? I've read that some of the '82 Birds came with Pontiac mount holes, because Pontiac had originally planned to offer the 301 in them. Can't verify this. Anyhow, the '75 Ventura may have also come with Pontiac holes, if a Pontiac engine option was originally planned. Last edited by ponyakr; 01-17-2019 at 02:26 AM. |
