Diesel turbo's
We are changing out some generator's. They are Detroit Diesel's V16 engines. Each engine has a turbo on each bank. It's a shame but we are scaping these 40 year old generators. Is it worth saving the turbo's? Can you use these on a gas engine? How about the super chargers?

Air Research and Garrett Turbos were basically the same company for many years.
The TV8101 Turbocharger would work well on a large displacement engine using one turbo. If you could get a couple of good rebuildable units and install one on a 455+ cid engine (496_ would be better) you couls make 18 psi and decent horsepower. It would be a heavy sucker though and a Frame Mount like some guys on the PY Board had done would be the way to mount it. You can put a Turbo on either type engine, Gas or diesel and the turbo does not care. It just moves air. You would want to do a BLOW THRU turbo system installation. Tom V.

I have two tv8101's put up. The turbo that's on my car is a tv8513 which is basically the same turbo except it has a larger compressor cover and is an 88mm. The tv8101's that I have are 510513 which are 85mm's with 1.60 a/r turbine housings with 111mm exhaust wheels.. The tv series are like our engines in that the parts will interchange. For instance I have a few turbine housings from tv8102's that are 1.23 a/r housings to spool a little quicker. As far as performance goes I am very happy with them. I have very little money in these turbos. My engine is a 469" 455" based engine that runs 9.40's with a 3,800lb raceweight nonintercooled on 8psi with leaving on the footbrake, to give you an idea of performance.
What a/r housings are on the exhaust housings on those? They have different a/r's on different applications. I have housings in 1.23, 1.39, and 1.60 a/r's. I've read about a 1.08 a/r housting but haven't found them yet. I'll put a video up here of a guy using a tv8101 on his 360" sbc in an old Camaro. He ran 5.60's at 128mph in the 1/8th on 21psi i think with his. It's an old video and I'm not sure if he even has the car anymore but they run decent |

This was a Camaro called Doo Doo Brown. It was just a 360" SBC with a home built carb. He ran an HT60 Holset turbo for a while then switched to the TV8101 and went a little faster. |

I am running a TV7101 on a 455 with fuel injection. Has a big A/R exhaust housing on it, like 1.30 or more, I cant remember, spools great though. So far only on the street though.

Great Info Boostedbird.
At one time, I had a pair of the Diesel Turbos (used on the Navy Seal "Combatant Craft Assault Boats"). See Photo. A PY member actually was stationed in the "Middle East" and acquired them (from a Boat that had some "injuries"), he said. I gave them to a Ford Technician who was wanting to build a Turbo vehicle. I believe that the TV8101 Turbo might have a turbine housing as small as a .96
which might be the one you have 69GTO. Tom V.

FWIW, one of those turbos the OP first posted about is designed to feed 568 Cu In, or one bank of the 16V-71.
The genset engine is rated at 800 HP @1600 RPM, 2150 lb ft of torque, according to info on Wikipedia. Wiki is correct about probably 50% of the time...…………..

Agree, those turbos will move a lot of air and yes, the turbos are designed for a dual installation. 400 hp from a 286 cubic inch (one bank of the engine) says a a lot.
about 1.4 pressure ratio or 10 psi of boost pressure assumed at 1600 rpm. Tom V.

I am amazed at these older engines. They are out right massive. It actually looks like 2 v8 diesels bolted together to make a v16. Not only do they have 2 turbos they have 2 superchargers sitting down between the heads. 40 year old engines with 700 hours.

21,000 miles, (Hours converted to mileage) they haven't even broken in yet. Is it mandatory that the engines be scrapped? Someone must want a 16V 71 T engine with so few hours on them.

We contacted a few outfits around the country. No one is really interested. One has a bad generator. Both have no controls or electronics on the generators to control power output. As soon they hear they have no radiators and have been using processed sewerage water for cooling for the last 40 years, I get no reply. If they where salvageable they wouldn't be spending a ton of money to replace them.
One engine dam near 6' long and probably weighs well over 6000lbs. Just debating if I should save the 4 turbo's. |

Put the turbos on Craigs list, there are turbos on there all the time for $100-500. Some one will think they've stumbled upon a great deal for their BB chev.

The superchargers were needed to start these engines. A two cycle diesel needes forced induction to run. The superchargers supplied the air needed until the turbos could spool up.

I would consider pulling the heads off that 16v92. They should fit on a (ie half of a 16v92), 8v92, 8v92ta, and even some 4 cylinders diesels. That low of hrs they are pretty valuable. The 8v92ta, or a version of it is used in a ton of boats. Used in semis, construction and farm equipment also. We worked on a home made tractor for a farmer 15 years ago that had 2 8v92 engines one in the front and one in the back. Front engine cracked a head and filled the front engine with coolant. We pulled a 8v92ta 445hp out of a semi and swapped the engine out for them. I think that tractor is 2nd biggest in the world at 815hp. It held 750 gallons of fuel, weighed 80,000 lbs, lol. I would pull the heads before you weigh it up for scrap. This place uses a lot of those engines: https://www.bigequipment.com/parts.htm
You all have me wondering if I have a diesel turbo or two that would work ok for one our boost projects. We have a collection of them. One was off a 3512 cat gen set, two turbos for 3500+ or so cid engine. HUGE! Have a Mack that had a new turbo and shot a rod out the side, Cummins 855 turbos, cat 3406, 3208t, some newer 11.1 and 12.7 Detroit’s. Had not considered using any of those for a gas build. Figured most would be to cumbersome. We used a TO4 off a John Deere tractor on our street turbo build years ago. Seemed like the seals were touchy was my only complaint turbo wise on our old turbo engine. I will have to do some research, might have a tv8101. Jay Last edited by Jay S; 02-15-2019 at 11:42 PM.
