It depends how much money you have (piston changes or thicker head gaskets will work with e85) and what you plan on doing in the future. Anything done correctly will cost money, I didn't build my car/engine over night, think about what you really want to do in the future. Also remember with making HP comes safety equipment.....blower restraints.........engine diapers....trans/flywheel shields, etc.

The tires got popped because the cowards could not be men and act like men.
They chose to destroy my property vs tackle me one of one, (be it verbally on the forum or face to face.) You strike me as being the cowardly type guy vs the "Chief" and someone with integrity.

So far all you have done is "whiffed at the plate", much less get on first base in the debate game.

If the engine was not apart, I might suggest trying a specially made Cometic gasket and keeping the boost really low.

Because the Engine is Apart, now is the time to seriously look at putting the right stuff into the engine and the vehicle. Could not agree more with this statement by George:

"Also remember with making HP comes safety equipment.....blower restraints.........engine diapers....trans/flywheel shields, etc."

I had a similar engine with a tad smaller blower but running the same boost you want (6lbs). My e heads were around 320 I made 770 hp, oh yea I forgot I had a 455 anyway after running it s cooking of years finally getting my ETs down to 9 teens the bottom end let loose, it’s that I didn’t have an aftermarket block thing..........me bad! Just something to think about. I bought one shortly after!!

Gale Banks and his people, over the years, have helped me out on several projects.
I was very good friends with his Sales Manager (Gil Cormasi).

They helped me with some Exhaust Components (Very High Flow Mufflers) when we were doing the Hydrogen Bus Project.

I helped them when they first showed an interest in the ECOBOOST engines and the potential to optimize some calibrations. They have done a lot of Aftermarket ECOBOOST work over the last two years.

Gale goes to Bonneville each year, (if the SALT allows racing).
I was fortunate to be able to sit with Gale Banks and Bruce Geisler in their pit for several hours and discuss Turbocharging, Bonneville, and the future of Boosting some years ago.
Bruce Geisler's #219 Studebaker has seen a lot of boosted engines over the years.

Gale was testing a Roots Supercharger system on a big block engine but with Gale's special "Water to Air inter-cooler" sandwiched between the supercharger and the intake manifold. That system really helped with the Trap Speeds as the inter-cooler allowed continuous power over the entire 5 mile testing section.

When Gale or Gil came to town, to visit the GM Boys, (when I was working at my Boost job), we would have lunch many times at this Dearborn restaurant. Great Mexican food. https://www.mexicanfiesta.net/mexica...dearborn-menu/

Some times we would have dinner in Vegas for the SEMA Show and other times in Florida for the PRI shows when it was there.

Gale is an OUTSTANDING presenter of information and can really get his points across well, He taught classes at GMI (boosting) many years ago.

I bring those points up for anyone who bothered to watch the Banks Presentation on boosting in the link posted.

I guess I should have read it first before I posted it, point is gotta watch how much HP you wanna make with a stock block. If your gonna use a 400 block and keep the boost at only 6 lbs it looks like you should be ok I don’t see you making too much over 700hp with your combo.

my heads are 310 eheads from sdperf....i actually have everything to put together as a n/a motor at close to that 700 mark....which 700 is plenty good enough...the block is a 455. but i have others a 400 and 455.....and a new blocks my end goal but just not one i can pull off at the minute.

ive got the blower restraints...scattershield....no diaper...

maybee i might just put this shortblock together as an upgrade later for the kids 64, and do up something a touch better for the blower deal

Before Marty Palbykin went boost, he had a 700+ NA 455 engine too.
It ran well, had cast iron 455 HO heads and light weight pistons, pins, and SB Chevy rod bearings. It was actually closer to a 474 engine vs a 455 engine.

The last time He raced that engine (which was in the mid 90s at Norwalk Ohio) the engine was running good times but just did not seem right. He did not make the last pass he could have made. We put it on the trailer and took it home for a engine teardown and inspection.

What we found was:

1) the #3 4-Bolt Main Cap was completely broken with a complete split up the inside bolt hole drilling of the 4-Bolt Main Cap. The outer small bolt was just holding the cap roughly in place on the one side.

2) the Front Main Cap had a split 1/2 way up the Main Cap and on the same side as the
#3 Main Cap.

3) the #2 Main Cap had a split 1/4 way up the Main Cap and on the same side as the
#1 & #3 Main Caps.

So the engine was ONE PASS away from a massive engine failure.

New Steel Pro Gram Main Caps were installed and the engine line-bored and later sold.

At that point we went with the 1967 400 CID Twin Turbo Engine.

I would suggest that you make the 455 engine a milder 600 hp NA engine and go with a aftermarket block for your boosted program, (as George suggested).
The 455 will fail under NA conditions, even quicker if you added boost to the package.
Luhn Performance made 860+ HP with a Vortech Supercharger and 13.5 psi of boost. (400 block and 455+ SCAT 4.250" stroke.)
But they did not run the engine in a street car for any period of time to see the durability of the engine. It probably would have been ok though as the engine made that 860+ HP at 5300 rpm. Marty's 455 (3.25 main) NA engine was turned a higher RPM for drag racing.

I have a Buddy who has a Big Block Chevy 555 cubes that runs 8.50's but before that it ran 8.90's with a 468 inch engine! So what does that have to do with this thread......NOTHING, I just wanted to post something! LOL!

Feel Better Now George?

In Palbykin's case he started with a 455 engine and pushed it to 700 hp.
It failed.

You posted that you ran a 455 engine and it failed at a higher HP level.
You went Aftermarket Block. Marty did not have real data on the Duclow block at the time because it was brand new so he went with a 1967 block. (And cast iron heads and ran 6.96 in the quarter. (in 1996).

So if you are implying that the info that I posted about Marty's engine or Luhn's engine is false, then you are just stirring the chit again.

Two examples of the 455 block failing. Two examples with the 400 block living at (in one case 1600 hp (3.75 stroke) and it the other case living (4.250 stroke) but with some 2 bolt main cap fretting at 865 hp.

Passing on historical info, (just like you with your Buddy with the Chebby engine).
So if we have some chebby guys reading this you post has some value.
Doubt if performerrpm cares one way or the other if you post about a chebby.
I know I do not care at all.

An NA or a Turbo engine is NOT a 8-71 roots blower engine.......NOT even close, So your post is useless to Performerrpm...............Just Saying!

Ok George since you only have experience with Roots type superchargers, don't make any posts about Torquestorm superchargers, Vortech Superchargers, Paxton Superchargers, Procharger superchargers, or Turbos. Stay completely out of those posts and I will not post on 8-71 superchargers.

That does not mean I will not post on Lysholm Screw Superchargers, Eaton Superchargers, or Whipple Screw Superchargers (which you again have no experience with and I do).

Sounds like a super deal for me. See you every 6 months at least one of your relavent posts. George.
Don't post otherwise.

Only two, George, In the early 60s, a neighbor guy, who ran a electronics shop in the town I lived in, wanted to do a 4-71 roots supercharger for his glass 23 T-Bucket.

So I did some machining and welding on a intake for him at the local High school and we put it together. He never raced it on a drag strip, but he had plenty of blacktop races.
So I am sure that you will say that does not count as it wasn't a 8-71 supercharger.

The other roots style supercharger was actually a Eaton 90 cubic inch 3.8l Thunderbird
Super Coupe. We built a few thousand of those cars and I certified the car with the EPA
as the Boost Engineer. But again not a 8-71.

So how many thousand Super Coupes will equal your 8-71 74 GTO?

The EPA would disagree with you on that point. But you really do not care do you, George.
The PY members might though.

I get it now. If you do it as a HOBBY then that COUNTS.
If you do it as a JOB, then that does not count, I got it now George.
