That doesn't make the guy any different than about 75% of the people here...we all have projects sitting around for someday. At least he saved the cars and they didn't go to the scrapyard.

Vintage cars are big in the town I live in - They are all over the roads and I can't tell you how many old cars I see under tarps in side yards or under stacks of boxes in garages. They're being saved for "someday" - but probably somebody else.

People can do whatever they want with their property of course. But, people that let nice Pontiacs rust away do not "love" Pontiacs, they have an illness that has manifested itself in the form of Pontiacs. Could have been bobble heads, old bicycles, lawn ornaments or stuffed animals .... it is merely a symptom of the disease.

Someone that truly respects and has a great appreciation of something would rather give it for free to someone who will care for it rather than see it rust away in a field.

I'm talking about the folks with a couple dozen vintage cars or bikes rusting away in their yard ... not guys with a couple of projects they dream of finishing.

It is not unusual a poor widow has to deal with the property full of project cars. They get sold for scrap or low rock bottom wholesale price at best. Some dream fulfillment that is, and headache of a gift for a spouse that endured looking at the yard mojo for decades.

I had a hoarder who lived behind me until he was kicked out. 8 non running vehicles, all with a plan. Double garage full to ceiling, no walkways, full to garage door. I am sure inside house was nuts. Found out he also had 5 rental storage units full of "stuff" for overflow. The guy sounded very high IQ talking to, also very high anxiety, and very different. He was a blight on the neighborhood, I'm sure he is someone else's problem now.

/\ He spent a month with the biggest U-Haul they make moving it all. He needed 10 acres, not a city lot. Probably rented 5 more storage units. Him and his mute alien zombie girlfriend moved out.

I've got a very good friend who is a hoarder, so was his mother. I dated his sister for a year or so, she was normal and the father was normal. All very nice people. The house was a series of very narrow passageways between their "stuff". The father's room, and the sisters room were neat as a pin ... strange thing to see.

One of the hallways was floor to ceiling VHS tapes that my friend Dave had pulled off satellites ... he had five dishes in his backyard. The father and mother are dead now, the house is still covered in tar-paper and the "kids" (Dave is 63) have lived off the proceeds of selling family land for decades now.

Well, I could go on for pages ... but it's always the same cycle, sell some land, go buy stuff, surplus things, things he doesn't need, new projects never finished. He could have retired with a good income but he's going to die under a pile of trash ... and he'd have it no other way.

The topic of discussion has kind of veered away from the original post...the people shown in that video had a few cars in their garages, but I wouldn't call them hoarders by any means.

On the topic of widows disposing of their husbands things, in the city of Clemson right smack downtown surrounded by all these new condominiums that have popped up since their football program took off sat an older home that totally looked out of place in the modern college town aesthetic. The woman died and there was an add in the paper that the house and the lot and contents would be auctioned off on such and such a date but that there would be no tours and that no one could go in the house until after the sale. I figured typical hoarder and didn’t pay it much mind figuring the lot being on college avenue was worth a million plus and the property would be bought for simply that reason. When I was eating at chipotle one day a few months later they were cleaning the house out and they opened the garage and pulled up a flat bed and pulled out a 55 Chevrolet Belair 2 door hardtop that looked like it had been parked there in 1956. I wondered if the person that bought the house did anything with the car or just had it hauled off.

There was a guy who instigated endless complaints for his hoarding junk cars, crammed on a tiny property. Nothing special. Maverick, a van, some AMC junk, I don't recall. I told the neighborhood association president that she better not go to a pay phone and call the junkyard while the guy was away at work and represent herself as the wife. She better not ask them to tow all the junkers away - that would be a crime I told her. A few days later all the cars were gone.

My dad and I get accused of being hoarders all the time.... and we kind of are. We have a lot of cars, most are nice drivers that are all stored neatly indoors. A few projects, parts cars, etc are stored outside. I guess about 6-7 cars are outside (70 Catalina, 64 Catalina convertible, 69 Marauder x-100, 85 Fiero, 95 Impala, etc). But anyone that sees the amount of cars automatically assumes we have mental issues! No mental issues.... we just really like cars???
